Im not saying free is bad, but there are games you can't download for free. Those are the games I meant.
total anihalation - $3
red faction - $10
starcraft - $10
warcraft (1 & 2) - $10
Unreal - $5
Outforce - $1
Outpost2 - $10 (3 years ago)
Silent Thunder - $10 (2 years ago)
Yoda stories - $5
AvP - $3
AvP2 - $10
Deus Ex - $12 (or so...)
Kingpin:
The classic fps that never really went anywhere. It was hyped way too much "back in the day" and the game didn't really live up to the hype. On the other hand, it's still great fun to play and the multilayer is just excellent. Oh, it's full of lovely swearing and the like, but nobody really cares. That's one of it's main selling points really, it was rude. Anyway, £5.
Soldier Of Fortune:
The classic gory fps. If you've not played it before, do. The story's pretty weak, and the game doesn't have a huge amount to it, but the multiplayer is fun and spending an hour meticulously dismembering a corpse with a shotgun NEVER gets old. £5!
Starcraft:
The fantastic RTS for just £5. XD
Warcraft 2: Battle Net Edition.
This came with the expansion pack and full WinXP compatability, it runs well and it's still the fantastic game it always was. This was the best buy i managed to get, a bargain at £2.98!
I recommend checking for budget or pre-owned games in EB, same with Blockbuster videos, you can pick up some total bargains.
Fallout 1 + 2 you can probably pick both for under $15. Fallout 2 for me had the most replay value of ANY game I've ever played. The story and the possibilites kept me coming back.

anybody remember descent (1, 2, or 3)
Starcraft (Still one of blizzards best games)
Half-life (oh...wait)
Grand Theft Auto III (funfun)
Red faction (FunFunFun)
Black+White (Don't think it works on XP though, wth?)
Warcraft 2 (Nice)
Can't think of anymore right now

Edit: minor typos and lame crap

Yeah, The Dig did that. It worked on Win2K Pro.
Total Annihilation
Tribes 2 (10$)
Crimson Skies
I-L 2
Homeworld: GotYE
Homeworld: Cataclysm
Aliens vs Predator
StarCraft Battle Chest (SC & BW)
Diablo II Battle Chest (D1, D2C,D2X)
Heavy Metal FAKK 2 - okay FPS, almost no plot or anything, and only singleplayer - but i like it
and i agree with Starcraft and Descent.
Duke Nukem - You don't have it already? For shame... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Majesty - Unique little RTS where you put bounties on stuff instead of making armies. Very very fun and underappreciated.
Half-Life expansions: Blue Shift, Opposing Force
Or you can take your money, save it up, and each year invest $1000 in your IRA account. In 40 years you'll have $530,000 and be able to hire people to make games for you.
is that enough for a game in 40 years? or is that a price for making a game today?
Planescape: Torment
American McGees Alice
But my vote goes for Fallout 1 and 2!

Its enough to arrange for several kidnappings...
Star Trek : Elite Force is about £10
C&C : Red Alert 2 £10
