Sorry if what I am going to say may sound ignorant and/or conflicting.

I guess there are many definitions of "non-conformity." Your definition: in order to be truely "non-conformist," you have to go against all of society's constructs or what it deems as normal. My definition: the thought is all that matters (a bit too simplified?) Meager thought-to simple to be really called "non-conformist"-may exclude anything from fashion, materiality, and the such. Yes, they make a statement, but at often times are statements made for other reasons. If people can take away a part of your character or a bit of your mind and permanantly-maybe even slightly change-erase from your memory: ideals, beliefs, or strong thoughts, then you have, in a way, conformed to their wishes and desires. For example: love, if you loved someone and they (whoever) forced you in a way to stop loving that person, then I think you have, in a way, conformed. If whoever forced you to stop wearing clothes or stop rioting against the government, but haven't destroyed the fire which sparked the ignition, then you haven't, in a way, conformed.

That is all I could think of at the moment.

Shaking hands and.... both stabbing eachother... in the back?

I can't picture that without invoking images of incredibly long tentacle arms.

    (Edit):

    I know, try this -

As someone else pointed out earlier in the thread - if you have to give non-conformity a symbol, then its already lost its nonconformity.

I cant help but get this image of hippies screaming about American evil in King George square when I see the word "non-conformist" and "clenched fist".

How can one symbolize something everyone subjectively interprets differently. The only reason to have such a symbol is for yourself and only for yourself, going around trying to make a statement with it would mean different things to everyone.

However if i had to choose a symbol...i'd have to say teoH has the best one so far =)

So if you refuse to conform, couldn't it be possible that you are conforming to non-conformity?

    while were twisting definitions...

3 : absence of agreement or correspondence
Just because you dont care what the standards are doesnt mean you dont abide by them.
You can conform to standards without caring about it, and you can confrom to standards while trying not to conform to other standards.

Definition 2 is a sense of apathy, and definition 3 is an act of civil disobedience. We can argue semantics until were dead.

Besides at this point were just repeating arguments.

Well I wasn't kicking a dead dog, parasite. I brought that up in hopes to bring up new conversation, not to squabble over definitions more.

Oh sheesh I could go on forever about this.

I'll just make a quick example of someone who is NOT a non conformist:

A person who listens to nu-metal, wears makeup, whines non stop about life, and TRIES to be different and just looks like every other **** who does the same thing.

Not trying to sterotype those kind of people, but ugh. I'll write more later, maybe. If I get the chance after class.

HOLY. You guys actually made 4 pages of responses? Good stuff guys <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> . If everyone strived for non-conformity, wouldn't everyone be conforming to comformity? One of ya'll said something like that but forgot who. I guess its one of those things which contradicts its own meaning. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

No, I said if everyone tried to achieve non-conformity, they'd be conforming in a sense.
