Server Browser

<div class="IPBDescription">Can't wait for steam...</div> The server browser built into Half-life is screwing with my mind. I lost my list of favorites, so I'm stuck with trying to find the IPs the hard way. Here are the problems with the browser:

1) If I disconnect from a game, the gamma is screwed up (I know that's being fixed), I'm sitting there on the server browser, with whatever ambience might be playing (I disconnect early if it's a different language or people don't communicate; I'm a team person) in the backround, and I have to exit the game or it will give me the error "server is not responding" (explained below) and freeze when I try to connect. This is only mildly annoying.

2) When I try to connect to a server, one of three things happens. Either it connects me to the server with no problem, or it might retry it four times and fail (though, if I restart the game, I can connect fine! Trust me, it's happened enough that I know it's not the server), or it might display "Error: Server is not responding" in the console, retry the connection, display the error again, and repeat the cycle several times, with my input completely locked out, until I ctrl-alt-delete and terminate the process (not even end the program, I actually have to terminate the freaking process tree!). This is pretty annoying.

3) If I hit the update button, one of three things happens. Either it grabs around 350-400 NS servers and displays the info after a few seconds, or it might grab all 10000 servers running HL or an HL mod, or it might grab the 350-400 NS servers but only display 15-20 of them. It's almost totally random, but I rarely get it to just grab 400 NS servers and display them, it usually only shows 20. This is really annoying

Does anyone else have these problems with the HL browser? Is there a workaround? (Other than all-seeing eye or something, I hate those)

*EDIT* clarifying something

I can't connect to half the servers and I get a different servers list every time I update them. But that's Steam.. what can you do..

btw, you should try the all seeing eye, its really good <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

another btw, to set back the gamma you got the little "reset gamma" file in the ns dir.

steam makes me reput in my cd key all the time I don't know why but it's steam and steam can't be wrong I think it must think that I'm hacking or something. so I do it I have my cd key memorized now I can type it in the box in like 3 seconds when I use the numpad.

I think steam is good it could be better like not lose my cdkey every time I play. I can't wait until ns is fixed and does not mess up my gamma every time it crashes (every time).

If Steam is asking for your cd key every time you try to launch a game, its probably because you have multiple accounts registered to a single cd key. I have the same problem. The only way around this is to use the account that you registered first. Check the forums at <a href='http://www.steampowered.com' target='_blank'>www.steampowered.com</a> for more help.

I don't think you understand, I went to steampowered and I registered on forums when steam first came out, and I even betatested steam. this is whack **** behavior.

anyway I registered on the forums then one day when I wanted to figure out why my cs performance has been so crappy (does not happen in any other mod), it randomly hangs for like a ms, sort of clipping hard to aim with it happening. anyway!!

I went back to the forums and went to post and it turns out that I was banned, even after not posting anything offensive. I thought inactive account, so I tried to reactivate it, but everything I do does not work. I can't stand steam and valve.

I've never used the defualt HL one; ASE is way better. Maybe that's why I'm ambivalent over Steam - it doesn't really offer anything substantially better for me.

Guys, I'm talking about the server browser in old HL, pre-steam! I said that I can't wait for NS on steam because steam has a way better browser!

I guess that I'll try one of those little proggies now.

That's pretty much the same as saying "If you don't like IE for a browser, sign up with AOL" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

not realy, because aol limits your internet experience, and is a service that must be payed for, while gsa is enhances the experience of joining a server, and is free. i don't know what yur smoking

No, what he means is that GSA is as sucky as the HL browser, in its own special way. That bloated peice of spyware is for nubs. ASE is worlds better.

Steam is weird. I can only see 1 -3 Euro servers and all the other servers are American (or worse <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)

Anyways...i havent noticed any probs cause i run ASE...but ive heard before that Won is starting to act buggy...

Maybe Valve has started to take parts of the code out?

I think i remember seeing somewhere that they were going to remove "obselent" (or however thats spelled) code very slowly from Won. Eventually taking down Won permanetely. Maybe they started? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

btw. about the gamma thing.. the fix has been part of the beta install.

c:/program files/steam/steamapps/email/half-life/ns/reset_gamma.exe i believe.. just make a shortcut to desktop (for all those noobie out there) but that should solve your gamma probs.

as far as for server listing.. im pretty sure you have to tweak with your configurations and stuff like that.

<a href='http://www.hlsw.org/?language=English' target='_blank'>http://www.hlsw.net/</a> is another good server browser. I think that ASE is just a better piece of software in general but for whatever reason I still use hlsw

I'm going to go check out ASE. I really... really... hate gamespy. I'm sorry, but their pop-ups, surveys, and general irritating features really force me away from them when possible.

I don't see the humor in that. Gamespy arcade works perfectly fine.

I used to use Game spy for a long time, until it started acting retarded out of no where one day (crashing on server updates, not showing all the servers) so I tried ASE. I honestly believe anyone that believes GS or GSA is better hasn't actually given ASE a real try.

Well, Torak put it much nicer than I would usually, but basically the difference is between those who survive in a playpen on their PC's, the AOL & Compuserve people, and the rest. It's no offense to those people, but I'd never choose to be one.

FYI, dont 'retry' a server too many times, some servers will K-Line you and youll get temp banned for a half hour (i think a half hour)
