    THAT GAME WAS SOOOO HARD

I'll never forget... the frustration... even with a walkthrough and detailed FAQs, it was like IMPOSSIBLE to NOT DIE... and I didn't want to cheat and look up answers to puzzle boxes I didn't get, but oftentimes the supplies inside were the only thing stalling death for another couple hours/minutes... and after all that, I still never even knew where to go half the time or what to do...

and yet, it was puzzlingly addictive =P go figure. thematically kinda a precursor to Baldeur's Gate, I suppose.

my friend and i had to combine our brainpower (we're like, 11) the whole time..

it was awesome having to learn basic mathematics skills WHILE playing a game..

it's hard to explain, but it was just awesome.

    LIES.

Betrayal at Krondor wasn't a hard game. Actually, it was rather easy compared to any other RPG at the time, because it had no random monster encounters. All the monsters spawned at their patrol locations at the start of a new chapter, and once the player disemboweled them, they never came back.

The key to understanding BaK lies in the following advice:

    1) Surprisingly many quests can be completed durring chapter 1, so do not rush to Krondor. Instead, walk around the map, whack some enemies to gain better stats, and find better equipment.

    2) The Brak-Nurr is too tough for newbies. Don't even bother.

    3) Search all the woodlands beside roads well. You can find a billion chests with useful things inside, and even a magic shop with a respectable selection of spells.

If you want a RPG so hard you'll cry and squeal "UNFAIR!" after an hour of playing, try Nahlakh.

It's an excellent game. I only wish I knew how to get it to run on my machine (yes, even under DOS mode, it has a kadendza about it).

If anyone wants to know a trick to get infinite money.... google for "Betrayal at Krondor" and "broken crossbow trick". Kinda fun if you've finished the game before.

I remember that trick -- something about buying broken crossbows and crossbow strings, putting them together, and selling them back for more.. =P

as for what I said about the game being hard -- maybe I was just young and impatient. I remember getting sick all the time from poisoned swords, etc, and not having enough money to heal, and always running out of food... my income never felt like it was fast enough to keep up with my food dependancy -- at least not fast enough to be able to buy any phat l3wt at the same time...

and as for leveling up characters -- it felt futile, because they stick you with NEW characters between chapters... what's up with THAT?

You get your old characters back. Sorta. Some chapters are some chars, some are others.

By the way: check your food before you eat it. Trust me. The first time I played, I didn't know to do that. I kept dying from poisoned or rotten food. You can save yourself a lot of grief by checking the food first.

yeah, I don't think I fell for that TOO much, but in retrospect, what a messed up world Krondor is =P 1 ration in every, like, 5 is poisoned... why was everyone in that game so interested in poisoning complete strangers?

To get good income without having to resort to abusing a flaw in the game mechanics, learn to bard. Owyn stays in your party for most of the time when you travel in the Kingdom, so he's the ideal bard apprentice. Just tag his barding skill in the skill inventory and play in every tavern you can find. Also, remember to buy one or two practice lutes and play them until they're worn out. Once you hit the 80% mark on barding, you can earn suprisingly ample amounts of gold from playing to the drunken patrons in taverns and inns.
