no, seriously
Here's the deal. I can connect fine, however I can't load any pages or connect to IRC. Sometimes a site partially loads, but it never finishes, same for IRC.
I'm not sure if it is my modem (128k ISDN) or my ISP (Telstra).
Is there anything I can do?

Hundreds of people are having the same kind of problem, spanning a few ISPs. Earlier, i could connect to IRC, MSN and online games, but i couldn't browse any .com sites. I could browse on .co.uk and stuff though.

I've heard that there's a server or something gone down that's taken the majority of american sites off the net to anyone outside of the US. Or something like that.

I'm far from an expert -- it recently took me about 2 hours to get my cable modem/router working again -- but all I can suggest is the typical things: unplug and re-plug everything, turn everything on and off... etc... my cable modem and router both have copious warm-up times... so patience was all I really needed...

someone else is bound to give a much more intelligent answer than me, so I'll just go back into the shadows now...

It's related to the DNS servers, the place your computer connects to to translate a www. link to an IP, some of them are busted, if you know the IP of sites you can view them fine by putting that in the address bar. It seems to be getting better, I had it on Blueyonder cable for several hours but it is now working fine, other ISP's may be slower to repair themselves.

    Edit:

If you require IP's of an IRC server or a particular website urgently I'll be glad to provide some for you.

On an unrelated note... you may want to change the font used for your clan tag in your sig... twice I've looked at it and for a second or two thought it said... something else...

Not sure if this affects you, but there was a massive electrical explosion at my ISP's HQ for the country that severed a lot the cables and shut down the service for this half of the country. Maybe it could have done something to your net access?

Funny you should mention my sig. I'm using a friend's laptop, and I see my old sig (4 sigs ago). Oddly enough, I deleted that, but this laptop still views that. Weird.

Oh, yes, and none of my friends have seen Equilibrium. However, I called up an old friend ages ago--now, get this, this guy was a complete nincompoop--, and he said he saw it and he loved it. Of all the people...

If it was in the UK and on NTL, they suffered a system-wide DNS failure last night. That meant: no web, no mail, no newsgroups, no irc.

My DSL was down all night last night and I called Verizon this morning, they said everything was down in Maryland (where I live) all night long.

Funny how all our internet is going off at the same time. Maybe the cables for NTL run along side the Telewest ones.

Alongside the NTL/Telewest DNS failure, and the electrical explosion for BY, us Brits also lost one of the main cables to the US yesterday. Not a good day for Telewest and NTL.

I think I need to make something clear here...

Blueyonder is Telewest. It's what Telewest call their internet service. I'm not sure if they have changed all the TV and phone to that name yet. Probably will though.

    Summary: Blueyonder = Telewest

Well, it still isn't working and my ISP claims it isn't their fault. A guy is coming out to check my modem some time this week
