Actually, the more intelligent animals on the Earth are all carnivores or omnivores. Biologically, it makes a lot of sense: it just doesn't take a lot of brain to sneak up on a leaf. Predators are territorial, to ensure adequate hunting area and to protect offspring.
So the chance that ET is like the "greys" of UFO-nut legends are about as likely as the Cat in the Hat. Alien intelligences are (in attitude, anyway- too many random events in evolution for them resemble us much physically) far more likely to resemble Predator or Klingons- or more dangerously- us...
But there's a lot of room for possibility: in our galaxy alone, if one half of one percent of stars have life-bearing planets, and one-half of one percent of those planets have intelligent life, there are better than two and a half million intelligent species within 100,000 light-years of us. All reachable within 25 years subjective flight time even if the speed of light can't be bypassed...

about welding armor,
the welder is actually just a tool that acts as a "authentificator" for somebody other than the commander to use the nano system. Without the welder, the only person who has access to the nano system is the commander (building things, etc). The welder is a tool that authorizes an individual soldier to have access to the nano system -- construction nanos come from the ship's systems and repair the armor.
