Previewing Stuff In Hammer

The main thing that draws me away from mapping is the inability to spot certain errors or preview lighting effects in the 3-D view screen. Is there a way to preview lights and other things without compiling the map?
PS- I heard about QuArK's OpenGL view but I never managed to figure out how to load an FGD.

although i've just given up quark, for reasons that it doesn't show errors very well and holes are near impossible to find...
BTW quark 3dgl isn't much better than what you get in the 3d window, it only shows a little bit more...
