only in discussion where the locks are handed out liberaly? (and the admins can change the polls)
edit: i should probably learn to type before i post again <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
It's just too tempting.
While it may be usefull for Playtesters to give their oppinion about a major change (Lerk-Flight for example) it's easy to just ask an admin to set a Poll up.
"normal" users should not be able to start polls... however I think it might be a nice idea to Create a "poll of the week" or something like that... the community just loves polls, so why not give it to them regulary?

Most forums that allow polls go on one of two paths, often both. Either they endure poll spamming, or it's hardly ever used. Often forums will go through phases of poll spamming and a period no polls, before returning to the cycle once more.
A poll of the week option sounds good, though, we'd have to think of topics in advance or we may have to go for some time without a poll of the week.
Good idea: There seems to be a bit of debate in Gen. Disc. over the plural of Onos, why not try that and settle it once and for all?
why not just issue locks and suspensions liberally for people who abuse their privileges? locks and suspensions are already issued liberally anyway :>
I mean, there's tons of ways to abuse the forums. we could swear, post nudie pictures, and attach warez to posts. Most of us have too much sense to do that, but when things like that happen anyway, they get moderated. I can't imagine people abusing poll privileges any more than they abuse our current privileges...
besides, fact is, people like polls. :-D they entertain us. I wouldn't mind seeing and answering a bunch of polls daily... ATI vs. Radeon; movie chambers vs. dee chambers first, etc... if it is truly believed people would abuse the privilege, why not ban offenders from polling, or limit everyone's polling to one per week or something... or perhaps only let people with 250+ or 500+ posts start polls... I mean, I thought spam threads were locked because people abuse them to boost post count -- answering a poll doesn't boost your post count...
polls give us a better sense of things; what's popular is often an indicator of what's good and what's not. Why be so poll-o-phobic? would it even matter if there was a poll at the top of EVERY SINGLE POST? you could always ignore it...
the only REAL excuse I could see for not letting normal members set up polls is if it takes up extra bandwidth or space or something. does it?
anyway, that's my argument/rant. Enjoy.
