Question for the computor experts.

<div class="IPBDescription">How to i upgrade from 700mhz to 2ghz</div>Hi I want to upgrade My cpu from 700mhz to 2 ghz. I found these prices on pricewatch.com

$161  -  Pentium 4 2.0GHz Sock 478
$182  -  Pentium 4 2.0GHz

I have a couple questions though.

Do I need to get the cpu or the motherboard? What would be better?
What's the difference between having Sock 478 and not?
Is the cpu hard to install? Or should I bring it over to Best Buy?
Will this cpu work on my computor?

Thanks for any info you give cause I'm completely confused over this.

We need more info. You've just given us your proccesor speed. We need at least your cpu model, manufacter and what ever serial numbers it has ditto for your mother board. Really though you might wanna give us all your specs so we know we're not telling you to do something that'll screw something else up.

Its impossible to go from 700 mhz to 2 ghz, he needs a new motherboard if he wishes to do so. Here are a few good resources.

    Epox MB $80
    AMD XP 2000 $80
    512MB 3200 DDR $150

Having a machine much faster than Intel for half as much... priceless.

For some people money means nothing, for the rest of us there's AMD.

(It will be faster and cost you less)
    Forget Intel!

    Why?

Because there are no boards (to the best of my knowledge) which would support both a 700 MHz chip and a 2 GHz chip, besides we don't even know if he has an Intel or an AMD.

INtel stepped up to a different chipset/Socket in their latest line of P4's, you need a new motherboard for the chip to be compatable for the rest of the system.

    But yeah, what Sonic said.

AMD>Intel, much cheaper, more calcs/Cycle, etc.

    Did I mention cheaper <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

<a href="http://www.newegg.com" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com</a> has some good deals, I can give you specific linkage if need be.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll try to put my system specs to the best of my knowledge(which isn't much)

    Intel Pentium 3 700mhz
    256mb ram
    Geforce 4 MX420

On the motherboard theres a bunch of little stickers saying BMW-2 and a bunch of numbers.

    Thanks for the info.

How do you tell what mobo you have, and what it can support?

    ...

OK, for both of you, I want you to do this, very carefully, and at your own risk!

Print this page out, or write it down, or something. Now, turn off your computer, and take the side of your case off.

Somewhere on your motherboard, there should be a big aluminium thing with a fan on top. That's your heatsink.

Now, look around near the base of the HSF. There should be a white/cream colored socket. Somewhere around there, there should be a gray/metallic lever. This controls the locking mechanism on the CPU. pull this lever away from the socket till it clears the little overhang, and lift it up till it doesn't move anymore.

Now, on one side of the socket, there should be metal bracket that holds the Heatsink on. Remove that by pressing down on one end of that clip with a screwdriver, and moving the end of the clip away from the socket. Lift it up, and the heatsink should be free. Grasp the Heatsink and the CPU together, and lift it away from the socket.

There should be a number on the socket. Write that down, bring it here, and we'll help you.

Now, replace your CPU and heatsink exactly as you found it, and above all, MAKE SURE THE HEATSINK IS CLAMPED FIRMLY ONTO THE CPU! IF IT IS NOT IT WILL FRY!

Woway, thanks leg. Thats for figgering out what yer CPU is, right? What about the mobo?
  • LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
That's for figuring out the socket type of your motherboard.

Your speed can be found with SiSoft Sandra:

    <a href="http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/san_dem/html/dload_x86.htm" target="_blank">http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/san_dem/html/dload_x86.htm</a>

If we know the socket type of the MOBO, we can tell the range of stuff it can support.
