You said "Oh no!" to onos in 1.04 because you had ALREADY LOST THE GAME by the time you've seen even a single onos in existance, because the aliens had three hives. Onos didn't MEAN anything, they were just a sign, a signal that you had lost a game. If the onos weren't in 1.04 at all, three hives would mean marine loss just the same.
But not only that, in many situations, the appearance of FADES was the harbringer of loss. It all depended on your commander of course...
But in 1.04, either marines won before aliens had a chance... with jetpacks or a two hive lockdown... or the aliens won. I can't remember any games where aliens held two hives for any substantial period of time and yet lost. One or two games, aliens got a 2nd hive but before fades appeared, one of those hives was taken out.... but still...
I never had as much fun in 1.04 as in 2.xx. You can TRY DIFFERENT THINGS in 2.xx. You can COME BACK IF YOU'VE MADE A SINGLE MISTAKE. You fight ACROSS THE WHOLE MAP. There are more frequent (if smaller) engagements all over the place! Scouting matters! And lets not forget the ability to counter any strategy the enemy attempts. Counter the STRATEGY, not just the players.
Man I miss the old caged <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> Maby i'm the only one but I loved the vent system going to gen and the the center resource. The two little hideing spots right ontop of the marine exit, perfect places for parasiteing and a one skulk ambush. Oh well, I guess the new caged might be more fair, with the door being removed from shipping tunnel. Alas, I will download ns 1.0 and run around the old caged and remember the old times.
nope you're not the only one <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> i miss caged and the double doors on the way to gen, infact i just plain miss the old caged, I think caged was one of the only maps to suffer from 2.0 optimisation (perhaps parts of hera too), seems alot less fun now <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> or perhaps just less familiar.
As for the whole 1.0x more fun than 2.0x I agree, I think it was - couldn't tell you why though just seemed more addictive and intense somehow. 2.0x is fun and definatly a better game, just lacking somehow hopefully 2.1 will be a return to the good old days as someone said.
I'll never forget one of the last games of 1.04 I ever played on COFR. It was an epic battle, but we aliens managed to break a two hive lockdown on nancy. The old cap all the res then drop a hive and teleport in trick did it. What a game.
