The Natural-selection Rpg

Well, I'd love to run one, but I can't stand how disjointed and... ugly the current ones are.

Anyways, I've been busy porting a watered down Shadowrun system to fit NS. I've emailed Fanpro and WizKids asking for their permission to recreate parts. However, I had to include a twist: None of the rules will allow you to GM. If I do get permission to publish the rules, they're going to be for player information only. The only way you would be able to use the rules and GM with it would be if you actually owned a copy of Shadowrun 3rd edition. If I don't have permission to recreate it, then I'll make a very... 'inspired' system on my own. Meaning lots of work, typing, and strain.

Ugly. I mean, read through the RPG threads. It's like reading an AOL chat log.

"I go over and hump the armory"
*Me uses cell to call 343*
"I play with my gun and shoot things"

It's unprofessional, hardly anything to do with <b>role</b>-playing, and cluttered.

    Compare it to this:

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:100%'>Glass of rum in one hand, cooling plate of beer battered fish at the other, Ichiro Kaname Krorburuku Runner-Extrodinaire sits fuming.

"Goddamned Elf-poser!" He curses under his breath as he takes a sip of alcohol. The Eleven-Eleven Tavern isn't the normal kind of bar that he'd frequent, but it seemed like a good place to sit and **** to himself when he'd spotted it while walking down the wharf.

His first day in Tacoma had been great. He'd come from Seattle to spectate and wager at an Underground Stick-Fighting Tournament that he'd gotten word about. Back in Seattle, Ichiro's fixer, a corpulent elf (maybe poser) named Fat Charlie had given him a sure-thing tip just before he left, and now he sits in a bar without enough money to make it back to the sprawl.

"Sure-thing, yeah right." he bemoans as he takes a bite of the soy-fish. Actually, Fat Charlie's tip had probably been given in good spirit, it had just been flat out wrong and Ichiro had watched his money go up in flames as his chosen fighter went down with a smashed skull. Now he railed on the Fixer because the only other person to complain about is himself.

"Now I've got to figure out how to make some money so I can get back home." He mumbles as he drains the last of his drink. At just this moment a man rings the big brass bell near the door. Turning around in annoyance, Ichiro spies the Captain, and is immediately interested. Listening to the man's spiel then watching him leave, Ichiro begins to think, looking down at the large duffel by his feet.

"God knows I've got enough gear to run, but I've got no connection to the runner community here." He muses about what working on the sea might be like, he'd never been on a ship before. It takes about thirty more seconds and two more bites of fish before his mind is made up. Leaving a tip on the table, Ichiro grabs his duffle bag and leaves the tavern, heading for pier 14 and whatever future the INTREPID might hold for him.</span><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    See the difference?

Anyway, I propose we have two threads per RPG. An [OOC] Thread where players post their out of character questions, and the GM replies with hard stats, and finally an [IC] thread where players write PURELY IN CHARACTER, and without sigs. You shouldn't even need people to write out in stupid fruity colors if they actually manage to write somewhat like that ^^ Eventually the IC thread ends up reading like a story itself. It works very well.

I used to roleplay that way *points at the long post*

Only problem was it took 5 mins to post something, and in battles in chat rooms with 50+ word limits it kinda got annoying

Yeah, I sure do. The reasons our RPGs aren't like that is a conscient choice made by me in the first threads. Posts like the one you describe was common in the first RPG, and while they add much with skilled roleplayers, they also tend to take over RPGs because everyone want to publish their thoughts and heroics. Thus, I chose to have players express their characters through actual actions, like real people are expressed. You're welcome to run your RPG differently, but would you please do me a favor and not call my choices ugly?

(and just to kill off any ideas that I might not know what I'm talking about, I DO play PnP games in real life. I do know what it means to roleplay, and I do for certain know that not expressing thoughts does BY NO MEANS prevent you from expressing a personality, and it has loads of roleplaying.

Regarding rules of the RPG. My way of doing things are based on two things. First, my players have decided that actual rules for combat were not needed, so I don't run rules on the surface (I can change that if need be). Second, I believe that few, if any, of my players have ever read through a full rulebook, let alone the same one. Thus, an actual system would either have to be designed from the bottom up, or be taught to the players. I have chosen to create my own, simple, system, running behind the scenes.

I take the same apporoach as Xect and make my own dice rules, though some of it follows the Star wars : KOTOR DC rules, besides reading like an AoL chatlog is very easy to understand plus the colours make it look attractive and set the characters personnality in a way.

I see the colors as a compensation for the lack of an actual person, the avatar doesnt really cut it IMO. When playing in real life, I identify a character with the player playing them, so after playing in the same campaign I get a feel for A's character. I do the same thing with the colors, getting a feel for the orange character after a while, and another feel for the white one. Some prefer describing themselves in third person with names instead, but that's a matter of taste.

And maybe we should leave uraniums RPG alone now, sorry uranium.

feel free to run your rpg like that. and good luck if you dont have experianced rpger's in your thread. i agree its better, but more difficult. and not anything like, say d&d. this system reads more like, say, a baldur's gate log. helps show a dm what each player does quickly.

the 'aol chat log' and the ooc text is what gives it rpging depth. it lets the players role play.

I could never bear to read through one of those RPG threads from start to finish, so I have to ask, where's the challenge?

I've only seen one person write up character creation rules. I want to know, like, how do you challenge your players? I've flipped through a few and it's just [I gun down the skulks]. [I pick up the C4 and blow the door apart]. The role playing isn't so much as working together to get a task done as it is just doing something that needs to be done.

Oh well. I'll write up some barebones rules and let you try them out.

Oh, Xect, you said you had problem with characters getting too wordy and publishing their heroics: That problem is because you have no rules aside from arbitrary dice-throwing. If a player was told beforehand that he couldn't set a bomb and reload his gun in the same turn, that wouldn't happen

Two issues here. First, a player can reload and set a bomb in the same turn, good for him, can you say difficult? Then again, the guy might actually be good at planting bombs and be able to do it. When you read the brackets, you'll need to check later if they work.

Point is that roleplaying is more than battle-challenges. The roleplaying that we focus on lies as much in expressing a character. Thus, we don't focus mainly on the "challenge", but rather on telling the story.

You do your RPGs the way you want, don't go round insulting the other RPGS, the system we use is fine and easy instead on describing every single detial right down to the rooms paint colour, as the players play the RPGs more and more they will get the idea how the heroic ideas don't work and eventually they will stop tyring to be heros and play normally.

    Sorry.

I think that everybody in here is getting a little emotional. When Uranium said that the RPGs on this forum where "ugly" I doubt very much if he meant it as an insult. I think he was just used to reading other RPGs by experienced people, like his long example, and then coming over here to these RPGs has been a bit of a culture shock.

I think what's needed is apologies all round.

I got a AD&D set of rules running behind the scences of my RPG. Thing is all the RPGs here are different. People have their own stlyes. You may call them 'ugly' but they work well.
If you want to set up your own RPG, go ahead.
