arent they just sort of irc, but instead of random ppl talking, you have random people talking about how theyre monsters and gnomes and wizards and barbarians and going around hitting things?

Some are more free-form than others. Many have just as much content as Everquest and about as much of a leveling threadmill, but are free. Which has got to be a plus. Others are basically chatrooms with some code thrown in to simulate a basic world that you can roleplay within to your hearts content.

Just go to www.mudconnect.com and look for a recently reviewed mud that seems like they're accepting of newbies. Once you learn how to play on a few muds, you've learned how to play 90% of them.
