<div class="IPBDescription">stupid probability questions</div> Ok, for you math majors, how many ways can nine college students be assigned into three triple room?

Be advised my teacher is requiring us to do the problem by binomial coefficient/binomial theory method.

The binomial coefficient "n C m" computes the number of ways you can choose m objects from of a group of n objects where you don't care about the order (which is the case when you're just putting people into rooms). So you can compute the answer to your problem by using the binomial coefficient to compute how many ways you can choose 3 students for each of the rooms.

You should work out the full answer for yourself though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

9!/(3!*6!) = 84 is the number of combinations that 3 of the 9 students could be divided into one of the rooms... I dunno what to do after that. subtract 3 and do it again for the remaining 6? that would make it 6!/(3!*3!) = 20 , and then the last three are determined by the first 2 rooms? making the answer 84 + 20 = 104?

no clue though. this is my lame attempt to remember math I learned about 6 years ago and never used IRL once.

    i got 9 C 3 + 6 C 3 + 3 C 3 = 105

there's also this crazy problem that's this:
Ten dice each have faces marked 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3. Compute the probability that when all are tossed, exactly 6 show a 2.

    I got 1120/19683, or about .0569

    Confirms??

I hate math, because all it is just numbers...

    Oops, sry off topic...

The answer to this problem will be different depending on whether or not the rooms are interchangeable.
