Medpack Delivery

<div class="IPBDescription">tips and tricks</div> I've commed quite a bit in pubs, and enjoy it, when i'm not going through commophobia <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> so i thought i'd write a tiny post on medpack delivery, medpack spamming, whatever you want to call it.

THE BASICS
most of the time, you don't wanna medpack a vanilla rine not carrying anything in a non-crucial area of the map.there are always exceptions, such as trying to gain the trust of rines whatever. but in general, it's a bad policy to medpack a rine just cuz they got an owie, you'll be bound to give them medpacks for every little nick and boo boo they get from the big bad aliens.

you usually should be medpacking later in the game, when you got the rez, and if the rine is
-in an important area
-doing really well for you
-carrying expensive stuff
-following orders

ADVANCED
now, i sometimes read about how some comms have problems with hitting rines with medpacks. it's actually quite simple.

Running to a WP or Guarding
you just lead them with the packs. if they are along a path, drop it ahead of them. if they are still, drop it in FRONT of them. the odd time you miss, they will waste precious time chasing their tails looking for it.

In a Firefight
in the heat of battle, try not to rain down the medpacks, it can be quite distracting for them, and a waste of rez for you. if it's an intense firefight, drop it someplace safe, where you think they will duck behind to reload. if it's in an open area, and he's jumping around trying not to get his knickers in a skulk's gnashers, drop it evenly around him, so he'll EVENTUALLY hit one.

Jetpackers
it helps if you know the map well, because you'll want to drop the packs in ledges and areas where he can refuel/be safe.

ACHTUNG!!!
be careful of where you drop it. at times, very high map geometry can kinda hold onto the medpack and make it sink slowly through until hitting the ground. this can be a fatal error for your rine, and a waste of rez. also be wary of ground that seems to suck up the medpack. areas to look out for
-anyplace where the ground is uneven, think the ground in biodome hive on ns_origin
-low hanging lamps are also notorious for slowing medpack delivery, think painted corridor on ns_nothing

hope this helps <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Two things:
    1. Armor 1 helps a lot with medpacking. It gives you a little room for error when you're supporting a marine in combat.

    2. Medpack everyone, everywhere, all the time, as much as you can. Ok, maybe not quite that, but do realise this:

A skulk killing a marine gets that skulk 2 resources on average. A marine killing a skulk gets YOU 2 res on average. So if 2 medpacks in battle can make the difference between the skulk killing the marine and the marine killing the skulk, you break even in resources. This is not even counting the fact that the skulk is now dead instead of the marine, has to wait to spawn, giving you more control of the map and maybe the chance to kill an alien rt, or save one of yours, etc.

So if you can accurately med your marines in combat in the early game, you should feel free to use as much as 3 or 4 medpacks if you think that'll make the difference between who kills who. Even if that marine is just a vanilla marine who's off on his own.

yes, i've heard this argument before, about keep the aliens from getting RFK. i think it's in general a good idea. i think i'm just used to rines dying and there not being a resource consequence <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

In fact , it is still cost effective to drop 3 medpack per duel (la marine vs skulk) because of the possible skulk upgrades (cara , celerity , cloaking) which cost 2 res as well.

When 2 of your equipped marines are fighting a fade... medspam away !

However , light marines generally don't stand a chance against an onos , so don't waste res on them. If the onos can hit them , they are doomed.

Niteowl, you can be my comm anyday

    A few things to add:

prediction - Try to predict where your marines are moving in a fire fight, and "lead" them with meds. Also try to predict when the skulk will bite your marine. This is hard but you can do it.

practice - If you are a tf-in-base-then-go-lock-down-a-hive kind of comm, instead try getting upgrades first, and send your whole team to the alien hive constantly and practice medding them.

Great game for training your mind to predict, follow, and lead: <a href='http://www2.abc.net.au/fly/flysui/flysui.html' target='_blank'>http://www2.abc.net.au/fly/flysui/flysui.html</a>

and yeah, good points, esp about the sending them all to the alien hive. that can be quite unexpected in a pub <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

IMO its not about the res saved or won, but more of the fact that you need control over the map, and that requires marines in key locations...

I always drop meds whereever I can, both to practise, and becuase I know how difficult it gets for the aliens...

The trick to being a good commander is to always give me med packs promptly, even when I don't ask.

sometimes when marines get scared and wont advance ill lay them a sparse path of med packs leading to where i want them to go, to show that im watching them and paying attention.

its an investment into morale and their health

I agree with above. It just feels so nice when commander wants to spend couple res just for me killing aliens. So I do it myself too, vanilla marines can do better when given couple medpacks and strategical key location than hive being cramped with aliens when I tried to save every niche of res for heavies.

and you gotta love the marines who are really grateful and say "thanks comm". and if they dont have voice comm, they get fragged while typing this... oh well <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

That game is really hard. I could only catch one fly per game. I guess I would be horrible at giving medpacks to moving marines with the 8 fps that I get. Which is why I don't comm, it would be a futile effort.

Umm, all I know is that clan commanders are valued if they can just put the medpack right on your head <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->.
