<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->We'll be releasing a game engine update via Steam this evening at about 7:00 PST. This release includes a number of additions and bug fixes, including one which should clear up the remaining cases of the authentication error people have been getting today.

Server admins please note that this release will require all game servers to restart. If you run a server on Windows, you'll need to restart manually; Linux servers will restart automatically if the server admin has enabled that option.

GAME & ENGINE CHANGES:

    * Fixed a Steam authentication error ("Invalid User ID Ticket") that occurred when connecting to any server which was run from the Steam Games list
    * Added check to make sure only one instance of the game is running
    * Added code to try help diagnose the 'filesystem dll not found' sporadic error
    * Fixed startup crash where the text file buffer wasn't always terminated correctly causing bad info to be parsed out
    * Changed error string "BADPASSWORD" to be a friendly string
    * Added some more info to help debug 'could not load filesystem' error

    * <b>Fixed 'load failed' error causing players to timeout from server during level changes</b>
    * Fixed problem pulling crates in half-life <i><u> How come NS dosen't have moveable crates?</u></i>
    * Fixed mp3 volume slider not taking effect immediately
    * Fixed changing the bitdepth in video options not making the apply button show up
    * Fixed downloading of custom content from a server never saying 'complete'
*<b> Fixed sponsor banner never being shown in the game</b> <i>Arg, they finally fixed it, thats not nice <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--></i>

    <b>* Increase MAX_HUD_SPRITES from 128 to 256</b>
    * Added avi playback option to game startup - the text file media/StartupVids.txt contains the list of avi's to play

    Actually, don't sprites unload themselves?

very nice... except the banner and the fact I had to download 750 MB to install this crap...

The best thing is the file transfer compression. This hopefully means its feasible for custom maps to be downloaded from the server.

Having tried to run custom map servers they never suceed as people just can't be bothered to wait 20 minutes for the download, and they definately can't be bothered to go find the map on the internet and download it unless you have very dedicated players. They are willing to wait 1 minute for a fun map to download though.

    Steam is good! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I only had to download the small installer which was something lesser than 1 mb. And the NS Steam installer ofcourse <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Since i had/have whole alot of mods installed to my "WON" HL, so only thing i needed to do on steam was to let steam convert them. Besides the minor upgrades ofcourse. But i can live with those. So in short, i downloaded max 200Mb.

In all and all the thing that someone complains that they have to download a large file to get the mod, is quite ridicolous. Hence even if there werent a Steam, youd still need to download it.

Just to let you know, i have Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike, Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic, Team Fortress Classic And the normal Half-Life Installed on my Steam.

    Mi likey steam. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

How can someone complain about a VERY unobtrusive banner supporting the kindly souls that offered all that bandwidth?

That is indeed very nice. Will they remove the hard coded bandwidth cap, allowing you to set it yourself?

I will note that it seems HLDS will not automaticlly update with a custom mod, say NS or SvenCoop.

You'll have to manually use the HLDSUpdateTool.

I'm enjoying Steam, but my fps has been shot to hell from it. I went from a constant 45 fps in CS to 30 fps when nothing is happening to 20 fps when anything "intense" is happening.

I think this is because there is no display option to enable glide, or mini opengl. I hate to have to get a new video card because Steam stopped supporting voodoos. If anyone knows a solution, that would be great.

Someone made a news post on www.sogamed.com about how to fix it. Go there and do a search.

    I'll try that, thx.

Hmm, I've looked for a while now, and I've yet to find the post. I think its buried in another thread totally unrelated to it. I did find several cs tweaks, so hopefully I'll find the real solution later, while playing cs now.

OMG my favorite server finally gets on steam so I can finally start playing NS again after a couple of months without playing (!)...

...but when I launch NS through steam now, I just get a blank screen (but the menus make the mouseover "click" when I go over them, even though I can't see them).

Oh the agony, fate is so very cruel... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I haven't looked into steam at all... so I'm not sure if I should even get it.

If the only HL mod I play is NS, do I really need steam? Does a server need to have steam installed for me to play there? If I install it, can I not play on older NS servers, or is my hl and steam seperate?

    Thanks in advance.
  • HauntedHaunted Join Date: 2003-03-01 Member: 14178Members
You'll need steam when 2.1 rolls out. You can play ns on steam right now, but you can only play on steam servers. This has factioned the community and hopefully it will be unified soon.
