i think halflife has a well good engine and will go on for at least 2 more years.

its a really good game i still go back and play the single player game sumtimes for a laugh i used to think it was hard now its just a really fun game

I know about tweaks but are there anyways other than -32bpp
to make the HL graphics better? I've got a 1900xp CPU, 768mb of ram and a Geforce3.

I have an AMD 1.3ghz, 128 sdram, and a geforce2 gts.
I get about 80 fps. Its the ram thats slowing me down. Argh.

Remember that the gf4mx version runs about the same rate as the fullversion gf2

what shortcut am i supposed to place these tweaks in? the HL one, the CS one, or the NS one??

My machine is way more power than HL needs so I'm always looking to try to get HL to use more of the horsepower. Going to 1600x1200 was the best change so far

Does anyone know if the hi-res pack (that comes with HL:Blue Shift?) does good things for NS? Is it worth picking up BlueShift to get it? Can it be had somewhere (legit) for free?

Yeah for comparisons if you post your fps but not you screen resolution it really don’t help much

Well i get only around 40-50fps during combats or as comm on my Athlon XP 2100+, gf4 ti4200, 512mb ram (sdram). Really don't know what slows that down (perhaps windows 2000?), but game is still playable. I have no AA and game is tweaked for higher fps except I enabled better texture filtering (no problem with such graphic card).

Here's my system, such as it is:

Celeron 700mhz
GeForce4 MX 420 64MB PCI
320MB PC133mhz SDRAM

I typically get around 40fps running around, 20 approaching marine base, and like... 10 in a firefight. (Oh ya, I play in 1024x768 rez)

Is this about what I SHOULD be getting?

If not, pls help me out someone!

Don't forget to set youre vsync to off, theres a post somewhere on the forums about tweaking that. I havent even done any of these command line prompts:

550 mhz P3
DSL (on SBC, slower than what it should be... )
Geforce2 Ultra (Don't know much, got it not to long ago off ebay)
256 mb ram

With vsync tweaked, usually I range from 30-150 ping on servers, running a constant 99 FPS unless theres lots of stuff going on the screen then it drops to about 70, running... I dunno something above 1024x1280 though (some really freakin weird resolution, I dont think its the 720 one though)

With this guide i can play NS in my second computer. In a first time i though that was very old to play NS

hl is d3d too.. but opengl is better because thats what the quake engine is designed for (what HL is based off of), the d3d is just a port so opengl should run better, except on some cards that run direct3d better.

I'm on a 672mhz P3 coppermine (112mhz fsb), with 384mb of PC-133 ram, win2k, Geforce 2 mx overclocked. 100fps and in battle about 80-90, in structure spam (marine base) about 60fps. A voodoo card doesn't have hardware T&L which should make slower CPUs run better even, and a geforce 2 mx is better than a voodoo 5 in fill rate so don't say your voodoo cards own lol. I don't know why that guy with an athlon 1.3ghz and a geforce 4 mx doesn't reach 100fps constant... it's probobly not video card related, it's almost always cpu/ram with NS, it's graphics requirements accually aren't very high.

When you make the autoexec.cfg with the tweak3d.net site, put it in ALL your mod folders, cstrike, tfc, ns, whatever you play.

ottoDestruct why would anyone want to set their vsync to off... it does little to performance since even a geforce 2 gts can run this game at full pelt... This game is very cpu bound though. With my gf mx440 i can crank up the resolution, turn vsync on, set mp_decals to some high number, set gl_texturemode to gl_linear_mipmap_linear and there isn't any difference in fps at all(i checked there is a difference of about 3 fps when running timedemo with an average number of epolys of about 20000 or so at eclipse, it runs quite smoothly, mostly because in a timedemo the cpu doesn't have to care about collision detection etc, it just has to compute some dynamic lightning and such).

My cheesy pIII 600 MHz doesn't have to do anything more when i up the settings so i can play NS with 3 fps more in an ugly resolution with screentares(from turning vsync off) with mipmaping in gl_nearest_mipmap_nearest mode(YUCK!!!). Which do you think I should choose?

This game is much more hard on your processor than on your gfx card... Doesn't matter if you got a radeon 9800pro in there with a pIII 600 MHz in there it will still run just as slowly(but you could crank up anti-aliasing and anisotropich filtering if you like... the gf4 mx440 is very bad with AA so you can't really get away with increasing it)

So my suggestion is, are there any decent console commands that change the settings in a way that lowers CPU load?, please post them if you can find any, they would help far more than most of whats previously been mentioned.

not that it matters much to me I'm getting myself a long overdue new system this summer...(I will keep my gf4 mx440 though since its quiet(no fan), it's fast enough for half-life and i don't play much else, but my CPU is crap for most of the stuff i like to do, therefor my new system is an AMD based system with 1 GB DDR (memory is so cheap these days ) and a motherboard with integrated dual- lan and integrated sound, and a serial ata pci expansion card for future upgrade-abillity. The MOBO is the only thing in this computer thats really front line technology, I get the rest with older technology cause it's cheap, and then I drop in a better CPU and graphics card when they are cheap/I need one. This I find is the best strategy when getting a new 'puter)

PS. I've got nothing more to rant about... I feel so empty now

edit: damn me and my spelling...
