But...but that's not fair Xect! I was just about bloody invincible for a good part of that battle!

"I'm invincible!!"
"You're a loony."

EDIT: Perhaps we should have some sort of volunteer list? Perhaps volunteers could somehow PM you and say "If you have to kill someone, kill me before any of the others." That way, people who don't want to lose their characters won't and people who want to give a little something for the game can.

If we could of, I'd probably have been dead a long time ago.

That wouldn't work. I'm not saying that people should die just for the sake of someone dying. The game simply becomes more interesting when there is a risk, however remote, that doing something stupid will get your characters killed. I mean, there's been times where you just kept fighting against impossible odds (and I'm not talking heroic-impossible, I'm talking braindead-impossible). What I want is that characters at least THINK about the possibility that they might not attack an onos with an LMG-equipped squad and just walk away with the whole squad in one piece. Of cause, this last move was a little TOO effective, and I'll try to avoid character deaths. But I believe that a game where no one can die rapidly degenerates into zombie-posting.

Speaking of Zombies, you've given me much ammo for my story about Ed. Xect. I thank you.

well, im sure i have more problems with my DMing style then you, xect. so feel free to give me pointers. but i think the biggest problem was the fact that they couldnt get reinforcements. plus the situation wasnt near as desperate as you thought. for one there were two AI's, niether of wich was anti-marines. the draug and the khraa were at each others throughts, and everyone but the khraa were focused on destroying us.
oh, and not to try to plug much but i still promote allowing people to keep thier charicters even after dying, if they want. it just sucks muck to have a heavily invested char like ed die because of bad luck. or if chars die regularly have people make chars with really good items just so they can be looted when they die.

I preferred to think of it in Pythonesque

"...I'm not quite dead yet..."

Letting the characters come back is often fine, but you have to be carefull. Death should still have a cost, or there would be no reason to fear it.

oh, agreed xect! but loss of potentially critical gametime, position, whatever items you happen to drop, etc. is usually enough IMHO. and im not saying you shouldnt be able to kill off chars permanately. i just think loosing a good charicter isnt a penalty that should always be applied. it makes the game less fun and discourages investing in your charicter too much (or taking any risks at all if its a char thats important or fun to have around).

"OMG! Ed's down! quick, one of you cannon fodder charicters jump the onos before he gets killed!"

Yeah, I know what you mean. And character killing is to be avoided as often as possible. As long as it's never completely outruled, because if it is, bad things happen.

i know what you mean. i err on the side of keeping chars alive. the circumstances required to kill off a char perminately and for all time in my RPG are insane beyond all belief. but i also retain the ability to make a char just go away if i want to, so its a good balance i think. its important for the DM to have at least a few handy plot devices for those emergency situations where you need to act or scrap the thread. and even just things to keep everything going smoothly.
