<div class="IPBDescription">is it just mozilla or ...?</div> Hello Team,

it seems like that since some day in the near past the website just "hangs" when opened with mozilla 1.5.
I have not checked the html, nor did i try to see if other mozillas are affected as well, but if someone would look into this...

I dunno, the forums wokr fine for me..
If there is any actual java (not javascript) it takes awhile to load it for some reason.

I can verify this problem with Mozilla 1.4 as well. This problem started occurring at about the same time that the new NS 3.0 info was put on the news page.

Actually, the container website (with the frameset info) loads fine. It loads up the left side flash menu fine and the top image works to. Unfortunately, it doesn't load the "NEWS" page <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/news.html' target='_blank'>http://www.natural-selection.org/news.html</a> and instead renders it as a blank, white page. If you click on any of the other pages, like "ABOUT" or "DOWNLOAD", it works. However, when you click on "NEWS", it shows the white page again. I also tried opening just the <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/news.html' target='_blank'>http://www.natural-selection.org/news.html</a> to see if it was a frame issue but the problem persists.

However, if I save the news.html file to local disk and open it, it <b><span style='color:red'>works perfectly fine</span></b> and renders exactly as expect! This means the ns.com server is incorrectly reporting the mime type (or some other pertinent piece of info) when sending the news.html page.

P.S. I have Java 1.4.2_01 and Javascript enabled (but disabling Javascript doesn't fix anything).

Er.. I'm on Mozilla 1.5, and the NS.org website renders just fine, in entirety.

You guys sure you don't have a trojan? Check with trendmicro.com to make sure. Also, try deleting your temp files before going to the page in question. Then try reloading to see if it does the same hang.

    Mozilla 1.5
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007

Loads fine for me.. possibly update shockwave? Is that what the side menu is done in?
  • sawcesawce Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10787Members
It loads fine for me in Firebird 0.7 on both my Windows and Linux desktops, and it loads in Mozilla on my Linux desktop just fine (aside from the fact that I've never installed the Flash plugin, so I get the HTML menu)

    Solution: Don't use Mozilla...

Speaking of, does anyone know where that website is that was something along the lines of: 'you know you're a loser when...' and one of 'em was 'you use an 'alternative' internet browser. It might not work with 80% of sites out there, but who cares, because EVERYONE should know Opera is better then IE in EVERY WAY!'

I've been looking for that page for a while.. I thought it was Maddox but I didn't see it on his site.

<a href='http://www.opera.com' target='_blank'>Opera</a> is another good browser you can use. I've never had any problems with a website unless it's down.

I remember Opera used to totally **** suck. You couldn't view pages with Flash, or anything besides HTML, more or less... Besides, what do these other browsers do, access a different internet then IE? I've never understood why people waste their HD space on 'alternative browsers'... geez get the Google toolbar and I'm set.

For one thing, it has "tabbed" windows, which allows me to browse 3-4 websites but only have one window open. It also has lots of quick search bars, loads fast, and looks nice.

It keeps them all in one window. You can have a window open and then just click a little tab below the buttons.

I did in fact update the ns.css style sheet when posting the 3.0 info, so it's possible that could've changed something. I use Firebird 0.7 and it works like a dream.

You're thinking of Netscape. Yes, IE used to be the alternative to Netscape and MS won (obviously <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
The new netscape = Mozilla (well kind of), Old netscape = Mosiac(?)

Mozilla also stops nasty website programs (trojans) and blocks popups, and it has more screen space, it's less prone to crash (even tho it's in beta... it's more stable... rofl!), it's faster in my experience, and it's slightly more convient to use with bookmarking.

The main reason I use it is for the blocking of popups and nasty virus's from bad websites. Other than that I've come to like the product more as a whole due to the fact it's more effiencent overall.

Why not take something that's better, and most importantly, FREE?

But easter eggs in old IE's used to make references to Mozilla. Im not sure :/

edit: the oldest reference I found was in ie 4.0 ...thats waaay too late <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

the egg itself was typing 'about:mozilla' (no quotes) in the address bar. This easter egg actually works from ie 4.0 onward...for all ie/netscape/mozilla/firebird browsers...give it a go!

I guess I was thinking of the whole mosaic->netscape->mozilla thing that bo selecta said.

You people need to do some history reading.

Anyway - the front page works fine for me - Moz Firebird .7 - but looks <b>ugly</b> with that big empty black frame on the right side.
  • devicenulldevicenull Join Date: 2003-04-30 Member: 15967Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Blue
That frame is supposed to be there for some reason, I checked the html source.. I dunno why, because it does look ugly with it ithere.. but then again I rarely see the ns.org page, as I set my start page to the forums <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm not even gonna start arguing about browsers, other then to say I've used most of the ones out there.. that text based one, opera, netscape, ie, some other one I can't remember, and finally mozilla, IMO mozilla is still the best.. I don't like M$ in general, and would much rather use another os, which will happen as soon as I transfer my other hd over to this comp, dual boot, and get wine working for ns <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Btw: OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 is a free alternative to office, and it is backwards compatible with office (and works better IMO)

Didn't Netscape start out as Netscape Mosaic? I don't think I got that wrong, I even have an old beta of that lying around on my HD.

    ..

Last time I used Open office it was very, very slow. How's the performance nowadays?
  • devicenulldevicenull Join Date: 2003-04-30 Member: 15967Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Blue
Alot better, the stabilitys better too - This is just what I've seen from 1.0.4 -> 1.1.0 it seems a bit slow to start.. but then again everything on my comp seems to start slow (I should fix that one of these days) but once its loaded it works fine
1.1.0 Can now export to PDF's! Yay!

Thanks, I'll go and try out the new version!... But this really is awfully OT. In case a mod is reading this: sorry about that =)
