My Amazing Commanding Moments.

Some good, Some bad.
One thing I've found when commanding in NS is that your team's willingness to co-operate varies wildly from time to time.

On most occasions marines basically follow my orders when they are along the lines of "Move here and kill them.". But when I issue more complicated orders like "Move here and wait for reinforcements." they tend to know better and run off to die. A lot of people seem to think the commander's sole purpose is to drop buildings and equipment for them. These people must be shown that the commander is instrumental to the success of the team. Many times I have formed a strategy and tried to explain it only to have my ENTIRE GODDAMNED TEAM run off rambo. I had lost more than 100 res due to marines not sticking together to build resource nodes. I was reduced to draining our resources dropping medpacks on idiotic fools that try to take down a forest of offensive chambers with an HMG rather than waiting for the GLer to arrive.

On the flip side I've come across some marines that just make me gape in awe at their loyalty. Recently my clan and another aussie clan had a battle on Tanith. It was a great game, tense and exciting the whole way though, the results were 1 - 1 and they won on time. After the hearty congratulations we realised we had been given a two hour slot on the server but our game had only taken one. So we decided to all join random and have a fun game. I got marines and went commander. We were going pretty well. Fierce opposition was countered with even more fierce resilience. I had a shottie squad advancing towards satellite communication hive and another two-man team heading off on the west side towards waste handling. I was tied up with my shottie squad and was unable to assist when the other squad was engaged by a couple of skulks. One of my two-man squad died. I gave the other a quick waypoint to the resource mode on the raised platform in waste hive.

Cut to a minute later.

We had secured Satcomm hive and we were getting some hardware set up there. The marine I had sent to waste hive requested an order, having arrived shortly beforehand. I dropped him a couple medpacks, a few ammo canisters, a turret factory, a pair of turrets and resource node. I also gave him an oral order to hold here for a bit while I got satcomm sorted.

Cut to five minutes later.

We had assembled another strike team of HAs, GLs, a few shotties and a HMGer and we were advancing to fusion reactor. I got a order request. I clicked. That goddamned marine was still holding his position in waste hive! I was impressed beyond belief. He had sat there, patiently waiting for over five minutes, while the rest of his team was romping all over the map. If every marine was a loyal as this one aliens wouldn’t stand a chance.

I now regret not taking down this guy’s name and sending an email to the clan leader congratulating them for having such great troops.

Has anyone else had such amazing examples of selfless loyalty shown in a non-clan Vs clan game?

Well personally I have not had any great commander moments, but I have been a part of some of those for other people . (Yesss Feed my ego). Anyway, I always try to follow my commander's orders to the dot. Things happen of course that would get in the way, but I tend to keep the commander informed via mike. Often though I head off strike forces on pubs just because I wait for other marines and encourage them to stick with each other. Then I come up with a set of goals and ask the comm for his blessing and we go for it.

    **EDIT**

ROFLLOL? Shouldn't it be ROFLOL? Or is the extra L for emphasis .

People think they are so good, they can do whatever they want to. This story, however, is a real motivater. I'm listening to my commander to the pixel at 96?234.
They just want to the and have some fun, but they also want to run away from the . Let me get this straight- your one of the IRC ops, been here for over a year(I'm pretty sure), and your realising now that idiots play NS too? I don't wanna say this, but "Did it really take you this long to figure it out?"

Who said he is realizing this just now? Perhaps he just wants to hear our stories. Why do you have to put this thread in a negative light?

What we need for more order following is voicecomms that you don't have to concentrate on to hear... hmm... I wonder if steam will upgrade the voicecomm quality. That would rock. Finally I can hear what my commander is saying rather than "rufflesnoffle goffel proffel" when he means "goddamit goto processing!"

My greatest commanding moment : none, because all the vets keep joining aliens, leaving me with marines that dont speak english, cant aim and rambo.Naturally such games last beyond 30 minutes due to aliens wanting to have 3 hive onos/fades/lerk/gorgs rushing the base to get kills.

I have no problem following orders. If a comm tells me to hold position or to go some where, I do it. But sometimes its hard for me to do anything because the comm is an ****. Shouting at me because I haven't memorized a map and ask for a waypoint (is it really that hard to set a waypoint?), confusing me with orders that constantly change (sending me one place then half way there telling me to turn around and go somehwere else, sometimes repeated 3 or more times in a row), and other misc crap. Sometimes comms even explode if I ask for for different gun or for some ammo (I always ask, I never demand), is it really that hard to say yes or no without cursing or calling me an idiot?

Yes, and somebody needs to make it clear to them that if they do do that they wont get a nice, new sg/jp or ha/hmg.

This will never happen though. For every noob converted to loyal marineship, 5 other noobs will have already joined the community. One of the laws of nature...

well i never comm cos i suck, but i play for a certain comm often and it was on tanith, and he got in chair. i was waiting at base so hed tell us what to do, and he takes a 7 seconds maybe to say "hmm..lets relocate to..lets see...waste is their hive...lets go..chem transport guys" so, 5 guys already went to reactor room for some sinister reason, and there were me and another guy who actually followed order and went to chem. unfortunately we died ^^ and the guys in double res were like "WTH comm why place comm chair in chem transport, reloc to dbl, nub comm, eject eject" .... gg?

teams with less idiots always wins

Trying to command newbies is always hard, but sometimes the biggest battle is fighting the egos of the more experienced players.

It seems like the two extremes - complete newbies and veterans* - are oftern the biggest headache for a commander. Newbies are like young children: eager to please, but oftern their curiosity will lead them to danger. Veterans are the grumpy old men: they have become weary of the normal routine and hate being bossed around by someone who has obviously not fought in as many wars as they have

I guess being a good marine is simply to be humble and trust your comm. Although you have to remember, good comms are a rarity, and its not hard to see why so many players have learnt to ignore them.

*experienced players, not someone with "veteran" status.

Eh, I try to be as loyal as I can, and I try to make a response to every order or request "can do" I've impressed a commander or two by how right I sometimes am Anyway, I find the best thing to do in NS is be patient, most people play the game for the fights, but if you wait, you get everything set up right, and the game becomes so much better. That is what I wait and hope for, and thus, I 'can do' whatever the comm tells me to. I'm just waiting for a game where I'm not the only one........

Edit: BTW, I'm in TMM, so it wasn't me you saw, though I want to meet this guy too.
