R_drawviewmodel Is Back Sort Of...

<div class="IPBDescription">NS in software mode.</div> My good 3D card I just bought started acting up so I had to bring it back. They do not get in a new shipment until Wenesday so I either had to use my junky old default card that comes with my PC. (YUCK!) or try something else. I attempt to run NS in software mode to see if it would get me better frameage. Well, it did but I also got a bunch of other things....

First, running NS in software mode for aliens takes out skulk teeth but let's you see all of your other stats so it is in effect even a bigger cheat than the old r_drawviewmodel used to be. Sure the menu's messed up to see but if you have evolutions/chambers/upgrades hotkeyed then it doesn't matter.

Second, for marines you can easily see aliens when cloaked in software mode. I mean really easy. The highlights of green are very easy to spot from even across the room.

Third, you can sometimes see a player's model if they're close enough to a wall through the otherside. I don't mean an arm/leg sticking through to the other side but the whole damn thing. I got this occasionally also in Team Fortress and other mods in Software mode so I think it's a Half-Life issue.

There's some drawbacks to playing in software mode in NS. You seem to crash at random, get weird errors, lots of graphical errors obviously, and other bugs.

I haven't seen this come up in search so I felt people should know about it so it could be taken care of.

i dont see the big deal, who in their RIGHT mind would use it? not only that but the fps is TERRIBLE and you'd get far better fps with a decent 3d card.

People have gone to much greater lengths to cheat. I hope this gets fixed in the future.

Yep. I remember when Tribes came out and people a lot of people switched to software rendering mode so they could see cloaked units. It was crazy. (Tribes does not have cloaked units, but a lot of the mods did.)

Yes I am sure that the problem of people buying extremely hot computers to be able to play in software mode at low FPS without teeth models blocking their view will kill NS. We should all F4 now!

Software mode support was dropped in NS after months of attempting to get everything to work properly, and failing due to the limitations. Currently, only OpenGL and D3D modes are supported for 'standard' NS play. Though yes... that DOES explain a definite possibility as to how a few players so easily see cloaked units. Personally, i'd just code it so that NO models show up in software mode, if possible, to make software mode play outright impossible.

Sure, it may be locking out a portion of the playerbase. But honestly, 3D cards are incredibly cheap right now... and any of the $20-30 cheapies can run Half-Life in one of the two 3D accellerated modes, at least.

d3d doesnt work correctly. The Xhairs don't show up, the hivesight and marine minimap don't neither. I mean IIRC, that's how I played the first time I launched 2.0 (not on purpose)

Well...software mode is already close to impossible - just try it. Crosshairs are totally obscured (they are superimposed on a black box which, in turn, obscures what you're shooting at), there is no minimap, you don't have a menu and other useful information like hives and chambers do not appear. I don't think that the advantage of not seeing skulk teeth outweighs the glaring disadvantages outlined here. Furthermore, low fps is another factor - try playing with <10 fps even though all the tweaks (e.g. dynamic lights) have been turned off - I doubt you'd play better than a 99 fps player.

There have been extenuating circumstances (unrelated to cost or quality) that have prevented me from getting a 3D card, and I don't think it's particularly fair to do as you suggest when software mode really isn't an advantage at all.

I actually got fairly high FPS in software mode for the short time I used it and the crosshair problem can easily be avoided by typing "crosshair 0" in the console. You can see hives/upgrades by weapon switching which lets you see them for a second. If you hotkey most of your upgrades/sayings like I do then software mode is somewhat playable if you don't mind HL crashing on you out of no wheres and weird errors.

I hope maybe eventually software mode can be "fixed" and actually be playable minus all of the exploits even though I'm getting a new card soon for other players.

What other stats? Like health, energy bar, etc?

I was able to see stamina meter, health/armor, and most of the "important" stuff. You can't see upgrades but switching weapons let's you see them for a moment.

One wonders why my post was deleted..........

Actually at home I was able to see cloaked units really easily, now on the same pc in my student accommodation I truly struggle. The only difference I can tell the that the lighting in this room is significantly dimmer.

As for those who would use this? I can name a few, but then again I know people who would use software mode in the previous version, if this is the reason thats kinda sad.

Your monotor makes the biggest difference when looking for cloaked units...
