There's a beta installer available here, however there are some incompatibilities between NS 2.0 and Steam.

NS 2.1 will be coming out soon and will fix all of these problems.

oh yeah, and btw, it is HUGE!

Even the 500k version eats your hard disk.

Must make a petition against steam... mutter mutter...

2.1 is pretty much almost done, the NS team is working on bugs, balance issues, and final tweaking, it seems. Btw, Steam support is good in the new version, it works perfect.

    Yep, 2.1 works perfectly.

if you mean when will NS appear on the official games list, hopefully soon but I think Valve's priority is getting CS:CZ off the ground.

The right click menu bug is fixed as well?
Lots of servers with lots of people? I like NS 2.01 on Steam as it is, though as a newbie, I don't know the right click menus.

Grab Steam (with or without HL cache) and install.

Try to run Half-Life, you will either need the cache (Steam will download this for you) or the game will do a quick build and run.

Ride the train for a bit, play the training map, something. This makes sure all the files are there.

CLOSE STEAM (Use the correct method, not Ctrl+Alt+Del)

Get the beta installer (beta forums) and install this. It automatically detects the appropriate directories.

Run Steam again. Natural Selection will appear at the bottom of your games list.

Double click to play, all servers are in Steam's browser.

can we play the steam version 2.0 version of ns on regular ns servers or do we have to join a special steam server?

I don't have HL but I do have the retail version of CS, I used this last time to play NS. I have just been told that the retail version of CS is pointless for CS 1.6 and steam! So do I have to d/l the full version of steam (700 mb) and CS 1.6 (300 mb) and then when the update for NS comes out install that? Sry if this is off topic or anything but all this new stuff is confusing me. Before to play NS all I had to do was install CS retail version and dl NS and play....

u need retail cs, hl, etc for the cd key, so that steam can make your account valid.

the 770mb steam installer has cs, dmc, rc, tfc, and a few other offical valve mods, so u don't need to download the cs steam cache

just install the steam cache, and do as was said above

    Steam size:

After browsing through the Steam installation directory, I found that I could eaily purge most of the junk and get a nice 'small' 1.5 gigs. Though this is as big as Windows XP, it is better than the 5gig monster I started out with.

If you have many mods in your original half life directory, they will be copied over to steam and changed to Cache files. If you dont ever intend to play FLF, DoD, or Opera on steam, then these of course can be deleted straight away.

"[Steam instalation folder]\SteamApps" and "[Steam instalation folder]\SteamApps\[Your Steam Email]" contain the cache files.

    AFAIK, 'half-life engine.gcf', 'half-life localized.gcf', 'half-life.gcf' and 'platform.gcf' cannot be deleted. Pretty obvious really.

Also note that if you still have Ns.1.04 installed in your orriginal HL directory (ie, you renamed it before installing NS 2 to play the traditional way,) Steam will convert that too. For some reason my 'Third Party' games section had 5 listings of 'Natural Selection' in no particular order.

Any commments on this wouldbe welcome. HTH!

Also note that you can fee up lots of space by deleting your Won version of half-life and its mods. (something i will be doing after 2.1 comes out)

    !
You would loose all the other mods you have installed! For those of us (me not included, ) with 56k connections, downloading steam cache files for all the mods would be a nightmare...

Still, I agree that you would free up a lot of space.

you can jut convert them over to steam...though some mods (like the challenger deep) might need some manual work in order to get them to work right. (complicated, go to the steam boards to find out more)
