How Do I Connect Two Computers?

LAN
Okay...My friend just brought his computer over to my house, and we can't figure out how to connect them together to play NS! We are not using a router and we have tried 3 different LAN wires. When I usually play at his house, everything works fine because we connect to his server...We only have his computer and mine. Please help!

Well since ive done this many times i would know.
Ive heard that for 2 computers a HUB is not needed, yet we used one.
Plug the comp with 'net into the Master port (1) and slave computer into (2).
Set up the network wizard, if you wanna share files, if not just go into NS and make a LAN/NET game.
Im not sure how to do this without a hub.
I suggest linksys.

I use 1 switch, 2 straight-through cables. Connect your cable modem to the uplink port on the switch, and connect PC1 to port 2 and PC2 to port three. Now you both have internet access off the same cable box (Assuming you have more than 1 IP address from your company)

You need crossover or "cross pair" CAT5 cable if you are linking the computers directly, which if your friend has a server it is unlikely he has. Easy way to find out, read the side of the wire it'll tell you, failing that look at the plug and see if the two wires in the middle cross over each other.

Also google up a LAN setup guide, I'm way too tired to be able to post a coherent guide myself -_-

correct answer. Although if you have any cables already, its probably cheaper to buy an inexpensive hub than it is to get a crossover of reasonable length, for no reason other than the cable companies are out to screw you. Man I really wish I could still get cat5 for 10 cents a foot :/

either a hub (which allows evolution to 3+ PCs) or a crossing thing, or an already crossed cable. Buy the crossing thing if you already bought a cable, or an already crossed cable if you didn't yet.

But if you think you will include a 3rd pc over time, definitely go with a hub.

As others already said, you need a cross-cable (usually clearly marked too). Be careful, when you're operating with those though... You have to set a fixed IP for each computer (one having a unique one, of course). Only then, after restarting can you connect both computers. If you'll have the fixed IP disabled and the computers linked, it's very likely that you'll burn the network cards and also something else (happened to a friend of mine). Otherwise, when you have them connected, you create a server like on LAN (since it IS a LAN of sorts). Have fun!
