<div class="IPBDescription">computerly confused...</div> k my friend at Oberlin college is restricted from accessing a whole buncha programs from her dorm network -- kazaa, for instance, of course... and most games -- like gunbound, and I think HL as well... she can get on the internet fine tho. she's assuming they restrict access to all or most non-WWW ports (usually port 80, isn't it? tho she says it's 1088 there... now she says her http in port is 4702... all greek to me). Anyway, is she assuming correctly? Is it a port issue? I have no clue, personally.

And if so, is there a way around it? She's attempting to use an <a href='http://www.http-tunnel.com/' target='_blank'>HTTP tunnel</a> program to get around it... now she's telling me she needs the IP a program accesses if she wants to use the port tunnel... is there a way to find out what IP a game like Gunbound connects to? I pinged gunbound.net and got 211.33.122.170 but their web server probably has nothing to do with the game server right?

Feh. She's not trying to do anything illegal -- she just wants to play gunbound... =P anyone have any clue what's going on?

Try a program like Triangle boy or Peekatabooty to bounce your connection to hell.

I go to oberlin so I actualy know WTH is going on <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

1) kazaa = the devil (aka WHY you can't do anything here)

2) what is up with Oberlin:
Ports are NOT! closed (well very few are)

We simply have a throtel and a pkt shaper <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

throttle:
Prioratizes out bound (and I assume inbound) traffic. If it ain't http/ftp or from certain places (administration, and last year the labs till some idiots installed kazaa on lab machines), then you = teh bottom of the priority (aka EVERY ONE who is browsing/dling gets more BWidth then you <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>)

Pkt shaper:
basicaly it can tell what a pkt is coming from (sorta) and will squelch down acces for certain things.

This is where Kazaa being satan incarnate comes in <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>
Kazaa knows about stuff like this and if it senses it being restricted to much it will start hoping ports (eventualy over to the http port, aka 80). So the OCIT has to squelch it just the rigt amount.

So, in conclusion:
She can play HL (it is actualy an allowed game <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>)
She might beable to play GB (she will beable to connect, her ping will just suck probably)

Also, durring midterms/finals/peak hours the net traffic can just go to a crawl, making doing anytihng NOT school related a pain.
Tell her to stick around for winter term and she will be able to play anything online <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

oh, side note:
I am on my year off and live off campus, so I don't know how the network has been acting this year (it vary alot, depending on how many smacktards use kazaa constantly and suck all my precious BWidth)

So if she REALY wants to play games, time to become a CS major <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>

*note I will get back on campus and mess around with some peoples net connections this weekend and see whats what (and ask a few cit/cs friends. Will attempt to get back to you on this

Oh, and just ask her if she hangs out with the 4th floor noah people (if she acts scared I won't be surprised <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>)

lol she says she's not frightened, but she's not into that sorta thing ;P

she actually works for CIT so she says she knew some of what you said, but still doesn't know how to get around it... it's like you said: she can get on gunbound but can't really PLAY because her pings are like 3000 =P

and HL -- we played it a few times but she's too addicted to UT2k3 to play NS with me *cry* so she barely cares whether she can get decent pings on it...

but yeah -- if you can think of anything else, please PM me =P I'd appreciate it...

there is no real way <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>

tunneling dosn't do it due to the pkt shaper. (tunneling is designed to simply send data around a fire wall. though we do have one, it dosn't block very many ports)

so yah, tell her to get addicted to HL, OR try to start a gaming comunity on campus (I know a frosh who is interested in doing just that)

Oh, and as a note I am not related to the obnoxious LARPers (I am simply both a computer gaming freak AND an RPG frek, spend way to much time hanging out with Josh and Erin at Matrix <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>)
