<div class="IPBDescription">pwns</div>Man oh man, the new Castlevania game, <a href='http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/castlevaniatentativetitle/index.html?tag=mp_2to9' target='_blank'>Lament of Innocense</a> is really really good. I love it. Only gripe is it seems quite short. In one rental period I'm 50% done, or so says the percentage at the top of the map screen.

The coolest part of the game is definately the combat system. Its pretty simple to get the hang of, as there's 2 main attack types: quick and strong (duh). There's also item (<img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/style_images/2/icon12.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'> Axe) button and of course a jump button. The beauty in the system is in the combos, which you learn as you progress through the game. Sure hitting Square button 4 times unleashes a world of hurt, but there's so much more you can do to kill the undead... again.

Also another cool part is Relics & Orbs. Relics help you do magic abilities, whereas orbs (the more kickass of the two, so far anyway) turns your average Item (Axe, Holy Water, Cross, etc) attack into some form of super attack. And all means of switching out orb/relic abilities is done in real time via the L1 and L2 buttons and the right analog stick, which is a little wierd at first but once you get used to it, it absolutely pwns.

Perhaps one of the reasons I like the gameplay so much is that the gameplay is really more like a classic 2D game trapped in a 3D engine's body. Which is great. :D For some reason Gamespot didn't share my enthusiasm towards the game, as they gave it a rather low score. But if you read their reviews mainly they take off all the points not for any flaw in the game itself, but rather simply because it isn't Symphony of Night. Meh, to each his own.

So uhh.. yeah. go rent it, if you have a PS2 that is. If not then rent a PS2 and rent the game (and a few other good PS2 games while you're at it).

Maybe it'll do a thing like the Zelda games where you THINK you're done in a fairly short manner but then you find out there's a whole friggin other world and you gotta get 7 crystals and bomb the home of an overweight fairy.

I love the Castlevania series... I'm not really into the story. But they're hella fun to play.

You mean it's sorta like Metroid Prime, where they took a classic 2d Franchise and successfully merged it with 3d gameplay?

    coooooooooooool.

I'll rent it next time i'm home (that's where mah PS2 is)

[edit] I do not trust Gamespot. Every game I like they hate. Thats why I wait for <a href='http://www.gamerevolution.com/content.htm' target='_blank'>Game Revolution</a> to review the games first!

    Or like Zelda, or Mario?

yes, but Nintendo had the same exact companies putting out 3d versions of those.

Metroid Prime was taken in by an American company, one that hadn't done any work on Metroid games and made it into 3d.

Oh... so that's why Prime was so horrificly boring and repetitive.
  • Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
    you thought it was boring?

I'll admit, having to go through some parts was irritating...then I remember that it is part of the Metroid gamestyle.

except for the part where super metroid is one of the best games anybody has ever played in their entire life ever.

    ...

wow this is a castlevania topic... so while we're talking about sidescrollers, does everyone not agree that super metroid is better than most (if not all) 2d castlevanias?

well duh, but I made threads heralding metroid prime back when I first got it. This thread is for Castlevania. It too holds a special (albiet smaller) spot in my heart. Honestly I think Lament of Innocense is the best Castlevania game since Castlevania 2, which is the best Castlevania EVER (coming from a poor **** who missed out on SOTN).

For some sick reason (and I know DOOM will like kill me for this or something) I really liked Castlevania 64.

CV64 was great, one of my favourite N64 games. It had a charm to it I can't really place, though it did feel something was missing from it.

The orb/relic system sounds a lot like the card system from CV: Circle of the Moon, and also the book system from CV: Harmony of Disonnance (both on GBA, both great). Depending on your card combination in CotM, you could completely change what weapon you used (one combination made your weapon a laser gun, another would make your weapon some tonfers, etc), or perform "item crashes", so you could use holy water, and it'd rain the stuff instead, or throw homing knifes.

Castlevania....errr, the 2d sidescrolling shooter from 386era where a guy in a white jumpsuit bounced in front of castles?

You shall all be whipped later.

Seph Kimara: Yeah, the orb/relic system is indeed very similar to the card system, although this one has the advantage of making sense in English. woohoo!
