A Tip To Kill Fades And Onos

BallistoBallisto Join Date: 2003-05-19 Member: 16503Members
this has been touched on in other threads... but not really its own thread (i havent really looked though... just from memory).

ive found a great way to kill early onoses (oni?) and fades w vanilla marines. they key is to get them before they can run. if you can delay their retreat by a little, they're screwed. the trick is to get one brave/suicidal marine to block their way out, it'll take em a second more to kill/run around that marine. and if 3-4 marines are focusing fire on that alien, its going DOWN. even on pubs, you can be that marine, get in their way and empty your clip into their face. you might not get credit, but you'll have that warm feeling inside of helping kill an onos

shotties, hmgs, and ha add to the fun (ever weld an onos to death? did it once w a bunch of ha)

I've experienced this both as alien and as marine. On veil the marine start has 2 door, once I was a fade blinked in and slashed away on their rt. As I was trying to get away one of the marine closed the door, I paniced and died a painful death, followed by a lot of lols and rofls naturally...

The problem is if the onos has regen and stomp the vanilla rines will chase, fall into a trap I use in which I stomp em all as soon as they enter a hallway and kill em all

I once (as a marine) got locked in there with an Onos who was at 50 some odd health, I was completely out of ammo. (He had Cara, so his health wasn't going back up) Instead of him chasing me, I chased him with my knife, and knifed him to death. They thought it was funny but I was scared silly.

a few more things i forgot about that also have to do with this... you can use mines and grenades as finishers too... the whole idea is that fades and onos run when they're low on health, the plan is to either delay them so your guns can finish them, or simply just finish them. its kind of fun to put up mines behind them if you can. onos runs away **BOOM** no more onos jps work well for this - fly over their heads and mine up the area.

nades work well too if timed right - they have the bad choice of either running into grenades, or staying and getting shot. they die either way

Saw an onos knifed to death once. The 'rine just kept dodging side to side as the onos swung around trying to get it in its sites while knifing its flank. JHilarios and impressive.

I had one jump from marine start side of eclipse into Horseshoe with regen. It covered the turrets likea big flesh blanket and it died in seconds because the farm was so huge.

As for blocking an onos part, I know from experience, everytime I tried blocking onos I'd just get chewed up by two or three gores. It buys a few seconds, but it isn't really effective anyways due to the onos hitbox/hull (when its blocked u're pratically inside the onos which actually deflect some bullets from teammates). It works best on fades. I would also recommand luring the onos as a light armor (or heavy armor if you're adept enought). You would need motion sensing of course and have to calculate the distance of the onos' stomp. This will get regenerating onos hiding outside an outpost into open fire for your teammates. Once the onos actually caught the bait and came into open fire, then you would try to strifle jump behind the onos and croutch blocking it to give your teammates a few extra seconds.

This has actually been extremely effective for me. I guess I am just good bait. Funny thing is, I usually crouch jump onto an elevated surface to avoid stomp, and I only do it right before I sense they are going to stomp... you know, they hit a certain range and they pretty much always do it.

ya this is the most effective way to kill the heavy aliens, you just have to be careful when chasing an onos that you dont follow him too far. chances are he has regen and onos regen so quick after a few seconds he'll just turn around and own you.

Steady on. Not everyone does extensive research into how to pronounce the plural of NS based lifeforms. Also, I remember seeing a quote from Flayra stating that the plural of onos, is in fact, onos. Not 100% sure on this, but if you're so hung up on this sort of thing I suggest you do your research before flaming our poor resident nublets.

Vanilla marines? Is that like some special ice cream strike team, or something? How about strawberry marines, or double-chocolate-mocha-fudge marines?

    /sarcasm

Flayra also said that he wouldn't mind if the 'Oni' plural form was used. It really doesn't matter, this is science-fiction grammar we're talking about and that post was kind of silly. A better example of that irregular form would be something like fungus/fungi. And multiple plural forms are not unheard of.

It gets kinda boring to keep saying 'plain, old marines', kinda like 'plain, old telephone system' which people call POTS. So if you don't like that term than just use the acronym POM instead, as in 'We're fighting pompoms, hahahaha!', 'silly pompoms', 'pompoms suck', etc.

For some reason, the term 'vanilla __________' irritates me. It's a buzzword, and I detest buzzwords. What's wrong with saying lv1 marines? That's about equivalent to saying 'those marines have level 1 armor and/or level 1 weapons'. Then you just say lv2 marines, lv 3 marines, etc. Anybody ever say anything stupid like 'vanilla skulk' or 'vanilla onos'? Mmm...vanilla flavored skulk. Wonder what a gorge tastes like.

What i like to do.... mostly on GOOD servers.. is get 2 ppl with hmg to not fire at the onos/fade... let him do whatever he wants while everyone else fires at him...

The two hmg'ers sneak to the area of escape...like stand in his way of the door...

As soon as he retreats they open fire... usually one hmger will get eaten or killed, but the other will manage to shoot him and/or chase him down the hall and kill him before the hmg clip runs out...

    Works very well...

If im on a noob server i let them unload all thier clips into it.. and when it starts leaving(the signal its low on health) i chase it and unload my full hmg clip at point blank range.. usually killing it...

    ~Jason

    Aim for the head

NS Fades use hit boxes much the same as cs, if u aim for its head, it will of course take more dem

Oriagn, fade blink in, ran into me, lmg, la, full clip of lmg (no upgrades), and 5 pistol rounds, took him down

The fade had regen, and was on full hp when he ran into me

Yes, I have heard both said before on servers.

    va·nil·la
    adj.
    2. Lacking adornments or special features; basic or ordinary: “We went through a period of vanilla cars” (Charles Jordan).

There are lots of annoying things in the english language. Not much you can do, but let the language's natural evolution take its course. Maybe in the next few centuries we'll have another such term that is more common. Perhaps when the vanilla bean is extinct or something.

Very good strat, I like. But it won't necessarily work all the time of course.

It's possible to do the herky-jerky-fade dance for a while without gaining appreciable damage. Then at some random point you can act like you're wounded and play at an escape. And when someone tries to finish you off, you just wipe them out. The only guaranteed way of getting a Fade is to have 3+ marines in a line along its escape route. Of course, it still might have some backup that can save it.

another thought... a lot of the time, fades just blink around in circles to draw your fire... then attack you when you run out. be smart and hold your fire until you get a good shot (like when they stop to slash one of your teammates)
