But wc always messes with me...
I'm | | this close from quitting mapping altogether. I just spent TWO HOURS mapping out the new no-named map...and for no real reason, when I clicked on "File" to save it, I learned, that clicking on file is an illegal operation, and that it will shut down and not let me save the 2 hours worth of work. **** That. It was looking ssssssooooooo sweet...I was gunna save it so I could test the particle system, but NOOOOO. You guys were three minutes from soem sweet pics...but WC ****ed with me, and now they're all gone. The architecture of ONE room took that long...Polys were gunna be around 500-600 if I thought right. It just looked sweet. And half the time was spent with textures...grrrr. Well, time to go take out my stress on people on Day Of Defeat. And please...post your most terrible moment in WC when you were mapping for NS...I'd like to hear that I'm not the only one.

Heh, everyone has their problems mapping, I lst about 20 mins of work, but thats because I save OFTEN (habit from working in Photoshop in Win 98 and it crashing alot) I change a few textures *SAVE*
My biggest problem was with compilors, TBCC, WC and ZHLT GU COmpiler all didn't work for me, different errors with each. I was getting a little annoyed when Mr_P came and saved the day with a compilor that actually worked for me! Thx Mr_P!

I know the feeling, ive had loads of work lost cos of crashes...and sometimes it crashes for no reason at all!
Plus i never remember to save :S but thats one of the reasons ive decided to jack in mapping and stick with modelling. Making maps is too damn complicated, all i can say is that im in awe of you guys who can acctually make maps, let alone good ones!!
*grumble* worldcraft needs an autosave *grumble*

IFA, We know how you're feeling. Happens alot. Like comprox mentioned, I too save after almost every little change... just a habit now. I remember a long time ago when the same thing happened to me... I felt like you do right now, but a after cooling down, went back and started to work on something that turned out several times better than what I had lost. It may seem odd, but sometimes something happening like that actually helps motivate you to create something even better.

I almost feel like I'm encouraging people to convert to Satanism here but I use Quake Army Knifefor my mapping. It's MUCH more stable than WC, and even if it does crash, it'll do an autosave and ask you if you want to reload it the next time you load QuArK up. It's also IMHO more intuitive. Unfortunately, it's pretty poorly documented but I'm sure you can figure things out.

Just another option for you.

Well hey, just look at the bright side: At least you still have some of your map. I fried my hard drive once (like, last November) and lost everything.

OMG

Stop now and ceace the wastage of the worlds internet bandwidth. I actually have it installed in case of an emergency, such as a radicialist government taking over my country and forcing everyone to use QuArK. Think of worldcraft crossed with 3dsmax and then bang your head on a desk untill you forget about it, then think of somthing very crap, unstable and hard to use, like a concrete pogo stick. You now have a mental picture of QuArK.

I am running WC 3.3 in win98se and it rarely crashes. I save after EVERY change I make, no matter how small, just in case.

Alright, I've got a life's philosophy that applies here, and some examples to go with it.

I believe that out of everything bad that happens, good (eventually, quicker sometimes than others) comes out of it. You lost your map, but you didnt lose the experience. You know what you had made, and you can make it even better the next time around, and you've got mapping experience as well.

I read somewhere about this one evergreen tree, that only drops its seeds when there's been a forest fire. After the fire, a whole bunch more trees grow up than were lost. See! A very lame real life example.

As for me, I save all the time. I save even when I havent made changes. In Photoshop, whenever I'm going to do work directly on a layer (and I avoid that like the plague, prefering to make layers on top of it and editing those), I'll make a copy of the layer, and edit the copy, just in case I accidentally made over 50 errors and couldn't undo

Certainly don't let this one incident stop you -- if your map looked awesome, thats a good reason to keep on mapping. If its good, that means you must have some talent, so you should keep mapping, and wow us with nice screenies

QuArK has piqued my interest more than once, but I've never actually gotten around to using it for a purpose (other than to learn how to use it for a purpose) Maybe I'll make some sort of deathmatch map in QuArK to learn how to actually use it... yeah, I think I'll do that. It sure looks interesting... if I could figure out how to load texture .wads into it!

Good luck with nasty crashes and saving and so forth

Wow... some people really flame QuArK. All your posts are plain ignorant.
QuArK has a carving tool and you can also rotate things in it like in WorldCraft.
It has a completely different design so read the documentation on the web-site and take some time to figure out all the possibilities.
It took me over a year to find out how *most* of the advanced features work!
QuArK is always good for a surprise - at least that is what I noticed.

As far as I can tell mapping software seems to be the most unstable software that people will still tolerate (with the exception of certain OSs ). If photoshop ****ed things up as much as map editors everyone would still be airbrushing by hand.

I spent a year using Ued while it refused to snap to the grid. . . pain. . .

Carve? Carve shouldn't even be in WC, for all the good it's ever done.

btw... I just made a plug-in for QuArK (yes, you can easily create plug-ins for QuArK) that creates trees and bushes in the x style. You know... those 2D trees that have two transparent pictures rotated by 90?

It might not be especially usefull for NS, but if you want to create some plants for your space station this might come in handy...

A picture is included in the attachment. Only unpack the .py file to the QuArK\plugins folder!

It would be nice if someone could post a comment on my very first plugin ever

Using XP has saved me alot of trouble. (remember the days of WIN9x)

But since I tend to compile fairly often, mostly after some major changes to the map, (new rooms or major lightning tweaks) I dont lose much information when WC finally decides its had enough.
