Call Of Duty

ONLY 5 DAYS!
Basically, I'm probably going to give up NS for a little while, in 5-7 days. Why? Because of a little phenomenon called "Call of Duty"

At first, when I heard about this, I couldn't help thinking "Not another damned WW2 game...When will it end?!" I saw the screenshots, but really, it was just graphics. Didn't tell you anything about gameplay.

Then one day, after I got some new drivers for my graphics card, I decide to use the just-released CoD demo as a benchmarker.

To say the least, on lowest settings, I still failed the test.

But the game quickly became my obsession.

Ever since playing the night-time Ste. Mere Eglise level, I've been finding out as much as I can, as well as playing as much as I can, of this game coming from the makers of MoH:AA. 21 out of the 25 developers for CoD were with 2015 on MoH, and their new company, Infinity Ward, seems to do VERY well. First off, they've been feeding us addicts well: A PCGamer demo, at least 15 movies, and plenty of information, if you know where to look.

I just had to make this thread tonite, because I just saw the video for the "Car Ride" level- much like the Tank level in MoH: AA, except one thing: It DOESN'T FEEL LIKE YOUR ON A RAIL, AND, its genuinely more intense. By the end of the video, I was breathing hard, panting almost. Same way was the Stalingrad level video- as was BreCourt and the Jeep scene. Nothing feels like a game anymore, it all feels...natural. As if its real life, but...well, you can quickload.

Please, I urge all of you to buy this, or at least play both demos, and see some videos: Their ALL amazing, and amazingly GOOD. Even the videos are fun.

The game is amazing. It is INTENSE. I've played both demos and it starts off calm and then WHAM! You're in combat. The game runs smooth as silk with details maxed, and the sound is in your face, especially with surround sound. For someone who hasn't played the game, let me draw you this image. A clear nighttime sky with dozens of airplanes flying over and dropping bombs. Tons of tracers fly up into the air, planes exploding and falling from the sky with Pilots parachuting down. The sky is lit up like day with every explosion. On the ground, you have large squads fighting through a field to a town. Buildings are destroyed and burning. Windows light up with gunfire. Tracers flying every which way.

And... geez just try the demo.

..I'd like to take this time to note:

The games engine is very polished and runs at high setting with no slowdown easily. Granted my computer is...closer to high end than my old one, but with a Radeon 9200, Athalon 2.0ghz and 256mb of ram it ran perfectly.

It has cool action, the demo level will 'r0x0rs your b0x0rs' (I don't know where that's from, but it's funny).

My only quip with the game: The russians don't speak russian.....wth is that? They want immersion, then they stick it in English? Pffft, the germans speak german, so what's with the russians? MoH the russians speak russian (in multiplayer at least) and in BF1942 the russians speak russian....I don't care if they want to tell a story, they can do it in russian! ....all done.

CoD will still be fun....very fun.

It runs so well on my ancient PIII 600MHz PC with 256MB Ram and Radeon 9000 Pro I was completely blown away.

Has anyone other then me played the PC Gamer CoD demo? If you havent, its really great as well. It starts off directly after the nighttime mission, when you are bombarded by mortar fire, then tiger tanks begin coming in, killing many of your fellow soldiers. I dont want to tell you the rest, half because I want you to play it, the other half because I'm a lazy bastid.

i tend to get hit by grenades just to get that blurry vision and then the sound fades in with a high-pitched tone and then it turns normal.... i love it...

As several have already said, it's a very polished engine and runs fine with max settings (except high detail texture but I didn't really notice much visual improvement). The nighttime mission is immense.

The Explosion effects are amazing. The first time I had it happen I lost my jaw somewere around my ankles and then when the sound came back I lost my lower jaw completely. (If anyone knows the location of my lower jaw please tell me!)

And theres probably a good reason why the Russians don't speak Russian, you may want to find out what your commander is telling you.

And I also hate you Americans, I have to wait like 2 weeks for CoD......

At least the game shows the war from all sides (Rather than just the Americans and finally I get the Enfield!)

I'm looking forward to the British missions the most. I like the idea of going using commando tactics during WWII (without having to play the Commando Games [even though they all pwn]). Should be good.

I wanna see a game set in the russian front, when the red army was getting the crap kicked out of them. THAT would be cool. And for CWAG an expansion where the red army pushes the facists out of the motherland.

Definitely grabbing this Wednesday - you're right, the demo was pretty intense, and who can turn down playing as the Russians in Stalingrad, the hugest and most bloody infantry battle in WW2.

The Radeon 9800 Pro runs it just fine, thank you very much.

Runs everything fine set on minimum-medium. Max kills the FPS.

Wow, who cares about this really. Just another boring and disgustinly easy first person single player and a horribly laggy and non-customizable internet server.

Been there done that with MOHAA.

Have you even played it? It's immense!

I suppose in a few months CoD 2 will come out and everyone will comment on how crap CoD is compared to the CoD 2 demo.

Yeah, I played that sorry excuse for a demo. They aren't introducing anything new. Its so easy to own (as with any quake game) that its just ridiculous. The graphics are the same that have been around for 3 years or so.. just some extra touches. The AI all looks pretty scripted to me. GG, its just Medal of Honor repackaged.

You apparently have never met any woman, ever, in your entire life.

I just called both EB Games stores in town, and the lazy buggers say they won't have it until the 30th. Bastiches.

    cri.tical, watch yourself

First off, don't insult in PM. Things like this can happen.

2nd off: I doubt you've played the demos. The immersion factor is out the window, it just seems too good to be true.

    And as a final testament-

Yes, I have played the demo. Sorry to say. I downloaded it at the same time with the Jedi Academy demo, and the Tron 2.0 demo.

Of those games, I rank them like this:

Jedi Academy (star wars, and at least it has cool lightsabers from the get go)
Call of Duty (medal of honor + better skyboxes, more extra sprites like those parachutists, and a couple of scripted events that always happen the same way no matter what you do in the demo.)
Tron 2.0 (It would have been better but something about it hurt my eyes)

Trust me.. NS is far better than anything on that list.

Jedi Academy is just Jedi Outcast with a new storyline a couple new twists and refinements.
Call of Duty is just Medal of Honor with a new storyline and a couple new twists and refinements.
Tron 2.0 just hurt my eyes.

Oh, and I feel sorry for you if you can't see its Medal of Honor right off the bat. I mean c'mon folks. WWII Shooters may be popular for you little 15-16 year old crowd of mainstream brainless gamers, but not for us more rounded and sophisticated gamers.

    - Never, ever, under any circumstance, attack or "flame" anyone. Ever. No behavior is bad enough that warrants retaliation. ... !this goes, but i'll leave the rest, because it had a point.

    Oh Delarosa! pfft!

While I agree that WW2 shooters may be a little common these days Call Of Duty may seem like Medal Of Honour purely because it was made by a splinter group of the team.

Howevr CoD beats MOH hands down because you have good teammates. The ones in MOH were either there or not. CoD apparently is squad based all the way through the game.

And the team managed to pull in a whole load of decent effects (Did you even try getting hit by a morter in the first part of the demo? That effect is astounding.) Then theres the use of Iron Sights, something hardly any game has.

And I don't really like the Jedi Knight games I brought JK2 and yeah it was fun for a while but it didn't have the intensity that CoD had.

    FLAME ATTACK! NAPALM AWAAAAAY!!!!!

Seriously, what is your problem? The graphics are pretty damn awesome (runs at max everything on a 9700 pro and 1.5 processor), and where do you get off saying it's ridiculously easy to own? Are you playing it on easy or something? On Veteran (or whatever the hardest setting is) you die in two bullets. Yep, that's easy.

I challenge you to get through either of the demos on veteran without dying once. Then you may claim that it is "Its so easy to own that its just ridiculous".

(Although I concede that it could have been a bit harder)

You think there were graphics like this 3 years ago? Name one game that had graphics this good 3 years ago. And even if you can name such a game, I doubt it would be as smooth or just generally polished as CoD looks (I can just see the above line being quoted in a few flames time).

YES a lot of it is scripted! Why does that matter? There are plenty of scripted sequences, such as the injured soldier being dragged to safety by another, but most of them CAN be interupted fyi. In fact nearly ALL the scripted sequences can be interupted. In the second demo you CAN save Private Johnson, just as you can save the allied soldier being dragged to safety (although it generally involves physically shielding him with your own body).

Well fine, you flame away, I don't care. I'll be enjoying CoD while you're still bitching that it's "0MG 4N0THER WWII G4ME j00 N00bZ!!!!1111wun!" and it is therefore OBVIOUSLY impossible that it could be any good.

There is of course the fact that Jedi Academy is running off the same game engine as CoD as well......
  • criticaIcriticaI Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15269Banned, Constellation
Hi, here is a game that uses the exact same engine that was published in 1999.

    http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake3-arena/

As for iron sights... you can do that in The specialists mod for HL on some select guns and many other games I'm sure (although I will admit its rare...)

All I'm say is that CoD is just the same thing refined, repackaged, and resold over and over again!

As for being easy, it is. I beat the first demo on every level and I'm not going to even bother to download the 2nd one.

My GeForce 2 on my secondary machine can handle the graphics at max very easily.

If I'm going to play anything on Q3 engine, I'll play Jedi Academy long before Call of Duty.

Call of Duty will definitely be one of the most ingenious and (slightly) revolutionary games of the year. The part where cri.tical is wrong is about the gameplay. While the graphics arent completely spectacular, they are pretty good. However, the enviorments and mapping are completely amazing, much more involving than MOHAA. This leads to the other point- the gameplay... Very few games have ever captured the feel of complete war. In most games you are super commando gordon freeman or whatever journeying by yourself racking up the kills. Call of Duty offers a complete squad based massive assault feel, where you are just another grunt. While it may seem similar in a way to Dynasty Warriors, it differs in the fact that you are nothing in the game. You are just another guy helping out, just another soldier.

    1) Yeah! Ad-post.
    2) Most everything stated above are my personal views, i guess.

Seconded. The best part about CoD is that you're not the captain of your own squad.
