Perfect Game Difficulty

What games?
What games have you played that felt like they were really hard but managed to keep you on your toes? Like by not giving you too much ammo, but enough so you had to carefully line up your shots. And making health sparse enough so you didnt feel invincible.
I think Max Payne 2 was one of those games, I would get to 10% health and think "Crap, Im so dead." Then I would find just enough painkillers to keep me alive through the next battle. I don't think I was ever above 50% health through the whole game. I almost turned on godmode twice, but yet again, ran into some painkillers at just the right time.

Half-Life on hard...JUST as you think your toast there's a couple batteries for the ol'HEV suit, and a medpack. Although if you do mess up you won't live to reach them
you're having more fun than i am =3
honing the skillz is great fun ^_^
Had lots of different difficulties (customisable? Not sure, very long time since I played it). Including one where headshots meant instadeath.
Oh yeah. RE:Nemesis is the best one! ^_^

I think there was Easy, Normal, Hard and Realistic. Realistic = 1 or 2 shot death.

Let's sit in a corner and share our pain.
Oh, and I didn't have any difficulty at all with Deus Ex. It was fun, yes, but I didn't have any trouble with it at all. I played through it on "realistic", and didn't have to resort to the quicksave\quickload approach to difficult gunfights. I figure this was due to the fact that I bought Deus Ex a looong time after it came out, and after I'd already picked up "elite" special ops skills from Perfect Dark.
Deus Ex seemed to be designed for "either sneak past everyone without fighting", or "go in guns blazing" - it seemed completely unprepared for "sneak around killing people one by one, like n1nj4".
Anyway, returning to the point, Perfect Dark was great. Difficult and rewarding, and immune to quicksaveitis by the fact that you can't save mid way through a mission
On nightmare.
Especially the one where the floor has trapdoors.
Even worse on hard mode since there's no radar (OMG!)
On the pic, It was the first game of minesweeper I've ever tried....After I beat it in like 6 seconds, i tried again and never beat it again, haha....I still dont get the point of the game...
Ho Boy, Pain.....
(And no quicksave for all you "Quicksaving Private Ryan" types)
It's really not complicated. When you left click on a square, there are three things that can happen:
1: It's a mine. You die.
2: It's not a mine, but it's next to some mines. It will change into a number telling you how many mines it's next to.
3: It's not a mine, and it's not next to any mines. That means it's safe to left click on any square around it. So the game does it for you. Therefore, if there's a whole mine-free patch, you'll a lot of numbered squares which you can use to work out where the mines are.
When you've worked out where a mine is, you right click it to mark it. This doesn't actually *do* anything, except for stopping you from left clicking it. You don't actually have to flag all the mines, you just have to clear all the clear spaces. The right clicking is for your own reference.
For example:
Small arms dude ==> Kinda easy if done right, seems like Half - Life with glock only for me
Melee fighter ==> Have to sneak and use your wits to stay alive
Hacker ==> Combat skills kinda suck, so you have to hack into systems
Heavy weapons guy ==> Massacre
Bomber ==> Set traps and lure enemies to them, although ammo is pretty rare and most encounters have to be avoided
etc. (Of course, all the skills of the game can be combined)
Oh, the possibilities...

Seriously though, I try to like Nethack, but every time I play it I think "WTH... why I am playing this when I have Diablo?"
And now to actually contribute to the topic, System Shock 2 is probably the best balanced game I've ever played when it comes to difficulty, you're always almost out of ammo!

DIE! DIE! DIE! YAAAARGH!
"You hit the Puse! You hit the Pulse! The Pulse misses. --more--"
Because Diablo has no depth whatsoever. Diablo is point and click pointlessness. Nethack is challenging, and incredibly detailed.
Let's take one scenario to illustrate its detail:
You're on your merry way and you meet a floating eye. These things are harmless, but they paralyse you with their gaze if you attack them. Fortunately, you've got a looking glass. You show the floating eye its own reflection, and it paralyses itself allowing you to safely kill it. You eat its corpse, gaining telepathy. Telepathy only really becomes active when you're blind, but fortunately you've got a blindfold. You put the blindfold on, and your telepathy kicks in, allowing you to sense anything on the level with a brain. You can't, however, detect the skeleton you run into because it doesn't technically have a brain. You manage to kill it, however, and decide to remove the blindfold.
Unfortunately, the blindfold is cursed, so you can't take it off. Fortunately, you can see a water nymph on the level with your telepathy. You drop everything you're carrying except for the cursed blindfold, find the water nymph, and attack her. She pretends to be friendly, and steals your blindfold while you're distracted. Hooray!
You get your stuff back, and proceed on your way. You meet a cockatrice, which is a monster that can turn people to stone. You manage to kill it quite easily with your sword, take the corpse, and wield it as a weapon. Good thing you're wearing gloves, or you'd turn to stone as soon as you touched it. Now, whenever you hit enemies they instantly turn to stone. Until the corpse rots away, however.
*Pulse clicks on SoulSkorpion
[edit] Damn you guys! You've got me interested in it again! I guess I'll just have to use Falcon's Eye to ease the pain.
