I'm watching at this mod for a "few" days and I'm astonished about the quality of the maps ! What did you do that they look so awful good ?! It seems that they are about 5 times sharper than the ones from CS or other mods. But again, it's the quality of the graphics in this game which makes me . Did you rewrite a part of the engine ? Please don't let me die as a dumb-### , explaine it to me...

Combination of really good textures, and really good mappers, really. The only engine addition that went in (that i know of) is a gamma changer, where you can increase the gamma, thereby improving color, and a particle system (where it spews out hundreds of sprites).

Hey Spawn,

I think it's a combination of things.

1. Squeal Like a Pig's custom textures are amazing

2. We've created new technology for the mappers, that really improves the visuals. A generic particle system, overbrightening and more really boost the visual quality. It has taken longer to create these features and then release them, but I think most mappers appreciate the fact that they can all get their hands on the .wad, .fgd and mapping tech before the game is out (and without being officially on the team, so they can dabble without having to commit).

3. We've done our best to attract high-quality mappers by offering them these tools and providing a friendly forum where people get can feedback. We also do our best to fully specify the mapping guidelines and answer questions about the game to make sure all the mappers are informed and are on the same page.

I think Cory's textures are a major part of it. They're amazing.
I just wish the overbrightening showed up better on the screenshots. Which reminds me... Flayra, do you know why this happens? Is it anything that could be fixed in the future? I'm assuming probably not, since it deals with the user's actual monitor, but there's no harm in asking.
(Sorry about trailing off the subject... just seems like a good time to ask.)

There is a way to massage the screenshots to match the overbrightening effect, using Adobe Photoshop. I will post some steps and a few sample screens when I get home tonight, but it's pretty easy.

Right, I can get my shots looking pretty close to in-game using the contrast settings in my paint program, but it usually can't reproduce the nice shiny glare of some lights...

Anyway, back to the subject: It's the textures I tell you, the textures...

I think part of the reason why NS attracts so many people from its maps is because, as far as I'm aware, we're the only highly active HL MOD working with an industrial-futuristic theme, and that's the style a lot of people dig.

Yeah Merk kind of hit the nail on the head so to speak. The MOD seems great and the maps are amazing so far, I can't wait for it to be released.

We, the mappers, cheat. We've inserted code stolen from more modern game engines into our maps, so they don't actually run as pure Half-Life. We have also added subliminal messages to the textures that read 'You will love this map' and 'You will send one million dollars to Yamazaki'.

The maps are the best I've seen. Cheers to all the mappers! Hip Hip Horah!

Ooh, crap, that reminds me... Gotta change the "to Yamazaki" part to "to Andrew 'KungFuSquirrel' Weldon."

/me also needs to get his ### in gear on ns_veil before he sees too many other shots that make him feel terribly inferior again... heh

Except in my case, you send it to Jacius. Oh wait, I haven't really put out any screenshots. Well, I have, but not anywhere for many ppl to see them, so, well... yeah.

The particle systems sure are awesome, but they really dont come out in screenshots (still media, that is), so I think that will make the maps look even cooler once people get to experience it in-game.

The textures are awesome, with a very techno-industry feel, and you can appreciate them in still pictures, which is why its so easy to notice them in screenshots.

I think the number one reason the maps look so nice is that most everyone involved is really excited about NS, so, in the mappers case, they're inspired to make more beautiful maps, and in the viewers case, there's a great big sign that says "NS = COOL" overlaying map screenshots, so they look great

In otherwords, theres a psycological aspect to it. Ch-yeeaah.

And they don't have one of the sweetest .wads available on the net either!

The .wad really puts this mod on top.
• g-1g-1 Join Date: 2002-02-12 Member: 207Members
hmm.. havent looked at the N-S wad, but the maps do look awesome so it must kickass.. probably the best .wad in the hl community yeah..

I've been following this mod for a bit and this seems like the perfect thread for my first post. Every screenshot I have seen is incredible. Even those new to mapping are submitting brillant screens. I am considering a map of my own, but everytime I see a new screen I realize my inferiority

Keep up the great work.

Oh, so many replies ! Thx for the answers, I'm looking forward (I think with a "few" other people) to play it...
