I don't know a thing about AVP2 multiplayer, but I know that the marine campaign is scary as hell

Its a lot of fun. And yeah, the marine campaign is scary. I set myself up with 5.1 surround, and made my room pitch black except for the monitor. Turned the volume up high, damn did I jump a lot.

Multiplayer is OK, and a lot of fun, but goes downhill with the Primal Hunt patch.
What I tend to do when I'm running a game is to alter the points so that pred kills give more, and facehugger kills give less (I play with lifecycle on, and there's nothing worse than a smartgunwhore who knows that all kills give the same points - hence my point changing).
I like it, its TDM is fun and the Evac, Survivor and Hunt modes can get really tense. We'd a hunt game where it was one pred vs 4 marines. We started communicating really well, trying to tag the predator...... no teamsay though, so you'd have to wonder if that blip was your friend or your foe, hehe.
Considering you said AvP I'll just tell you about them both ^^
AvP1 was pretty good for it's time, the single player campaigns for the pred and alien suck but the marine one was so scary it got a lot of people gibbering under their seats... I had to stop playing around the 2nd level ^^;
The multiplayer was odd but fun. Generally it was best to play species deathmatch though there were a ton of modes. Aliens were super fast and hit hard though they took next to no damage to kill making them powerful, agile but fragile. Marines were the general prey of the game as they were the most popular. They'd go down in 1 or 2 slashes from an alien but had a big array of weapons, motion trackers and were kinda fun; the minigun rocked Preds were stupidly overpowered but aliens could see them even if they were cloaked and were fast enough to screw up the aim on their plasma caster gun thingy if you knew how to dodge. If the pred was in the sight mode for your race though there was no hiding they'd spot you a mile off while not noticing the marine standing right next to them or vica versa lol The main point of annoyance for people was that the alien took a lot of skill to really shine but when it did it was probably the most lethal thing in there, the pred was easy and nasty no matter how inexperienced or vetneran the player was and if the server didn't turn off it's disk weapon (pretty common practice) they basically had an auto-tracking weapon that would quite happily chase their victim across half the level killing everyone they went past in their run to escape o.O
AvP2 has a lot of good and bad. The main 'good' is that it has nice new shiny graphics and maps, which considering the now heavily dated looks of AvP was needed. However... it looks like they decided to balance it with quake in mind >< Aliens were decided to be a bit too challenging for normal players to use properly while still being too powerful in skilled hands so they reduced its blistering speeds down to the same speed a marine can walk backwards ( can you see where this is going yet? ) reduced it's slash damage down to the kind of damage you'd expect from being slapped with an foam bat, reworked it's lethal tail attack so it wasn't really worth using, upped it's health a tiny bit so it's a bit more hardy though still toast under concentrated fire and finally gave it a leap attack. The leap attack... ~sigh~ Took a while to find out but the leap attack is kinda interesting; on it's own all it does is send you flying across the level and usually into someone's aerial grenade but if you hit someone while leaping it'll 'stun' them meaning their mouse controls go all funny and they can't move. At this point you can maybe hit them once or twice then run away again before MIGHTY MARINE or the pred wakes up and kicks your puny bum out of the level. However... I'm still not sure on the controls for this but if you press back then forward and attack while leaping you're supposed to do a double arm slash and from the few times I've done it, it seems like an instant kill o.O I don't know what the guys making the game were smoking when they did all this to the alien because they sure as heck didn't really work like they do in the game like they do in the films. Oh and before I move onto the offspring of rambo and terminators they call marines a few more changes I almost forgot they made to the aliens; headbites no longer kill in one shot... I hit a fully armoured marine with a normal leap, 2-3 slashes and bit him in the face before he (while still stunned) stuck his rifle in my mouth and pulled the trigger. Fun... In the old one you could survive by eating corpses and headbiting people, in AvP2 however the energy you get back for doing any of it is so ridiculously small you might as well not bother; most of the time you won't actually see the energy register on your health because it's that tiny.
Okies... Marines... What to say? Go this if you want to win. After them getting pummelled in AvP1 they decided they'd replace them with the quake marines, give them a motion tracker with ranges so good you can use them to track and kill people from the other side of the level and replaced the standard grenade launcher on the rifle with a rocket launcher. To win as the marine you have many many options, if you don't win then you might as well stop playing games. The simplest method is use your newfound rocket launcher; if anything comes with a level radius of you fire grenades at it while you run from ammo box to ammo box; the first one will probably kill them but you've got plenty anyway and you'll get roughly 4-9 kills just for spamming grenades in any random direction anyways. If someone comes too close to you just jump and fire at your feet. Because you're made of steel you'll barely get hurt while everything else gibs around you. Against other marines a simple headshot with the primary fire of the rifle should do the trick regardless of armour, health and the fact the alien headbite doesn't do that. Lovely... As for the rest of the weapons the only one you won't be using in actual combat is the knife because slashing the alien means you take damage from it's blood and preds can just smack you in the face with their charge-up spear attack which hurts lots more then your knife does ^^; Knife is handy for de-netting yourself really or humiliation kills if you can stab the pred in the head. All the rest of the guns are basically just variants of the doom weapon you start with; smartguns and gattling cannons shred everything and anything, flamers will annhilate everything and in small corridors they're completely undodgable meaning the aliens are a joke and well... you get the idea. Preds are interesting; they're actually fine for once. If they'd been done like this in the first one it would've been amazing XD They've got all kinds of crazy gadgets from netguns to their spear to plasmacasting doom and mines. Unlike AvP1 you get your energy back by pulling out a weird recharger which'll tell everyone in the level pretty much where you are (in the first one you just picked up energy around the level).
Generally I played as all 3 in both games. in AvP1 I settled into the alien, had a lot of fun and even got picked up by a super-high ranking clan. In AvP2 I'd get 1st place with marine doing the grenade thingy I just told you about (or 2nd if my flatmate-god-rambo friend was playing because he does it better than me) and I'd be the top pred or alien of the match if I took either of the other 2 races (though it was almost guaranteed the top scorer was a marine, with only the occasional pred and, if you won the lottery, an alien).
Just curious but did primal hunt help any? As far as I heard they didn't do anything to the super-gimped alien and gave the marines/preds a chunk of new weapons ><
Meh. I beat AVP2's single-player campaign in a day. A day. Besides getting very easy (*cough* Giantmechpieceofcrapattheendofmarinecampaign*cough*), it got a lil boring fr me. Curiously, I haven't tried multiplayer, so I can't say anything there.
If you hated AvP2 so much, you'll definitely not like Primal Hunt.
TBH I don't think AvP2 MP mode is as bad as you make out. Aliens are meant to be hit and run assaulters, and I prefer the Runner class precisely because of this. People who want to stand still in front of pulse rifles should choose the Praetorian or Predalien.
Marines honestly aren't as rockhard as they're made out to be - leap does a good job of killing them, and if you hit them with a charged tail they're dead. Headbites are virtually always fatal.
Preds have a bit of flexibility, from faster and lighter to slower and heavier. Sure, the pistol isn't a nice weapon, and dodging the plasmacaster is a fun pasttime, but by standing in the open you're asking to get killed. Preds are easy to annihilate when the server has a decent mix of all three species - and preds are ridiculuously underpowered when its a total free for all - they've 3 classes to try and look out for, whereas aliens can pick their targets with ease, and marines just shoot at everything they can see.
Add in the optional things like lifecycle, mask loss, class based weapons, Queens and Exosuits, and you've got a lot of fun. Just make sure you know the server rules before you connect - some servers have huge amounts of Exosuits so its' just a suit war for instance. Aliens in suit wars will have a hard time.
Exosuits are basically heavy lifters (that you've seen from the second movie), with heavy weapons (laser, minigun and rocket launcher). Ok, they're not really heavy lifters (military design) but looks like those.
In my opinion, AvP2 single player is well worth the money but multiplayer... No thanks. AvP 1 multi was fun as hell with the coop mode and even free for all, it was good. But in AvP 2 the species are horribly unbalanced, as people already pointed out.
So if you want a good single player game, buy it. If you're going mostly for the multiplayer, I wouldn't suggest this game for it.
Get Neverwinter Nights I have the expansion set (SOU - Shadows of Undrentide). Hmm. let me rephrase my AVP2 MP unbalanced thing. It's mostly unbalanced when it's team deathmatch. The marines just get in a small - medium sized room w/ only 1-2 entrances, group together, switch to smart-guns and use the auto-aim bs on it =\
I borrowed AvP2 for a while and I hated the Predator single player for some reason. I loved the marine and alien ones though. Definately worth the money. Hell, you could probably buy it for a fiver now...
Grenade launcher is different. Pred has a Combistick AND Wristblades. Pred pistol has been revamped. Pred has a netgun. There are different classes in MP, with different class based weapons. Lifecycle mode allows aliens to start as a facehugger, and the person they facehug determines what they evolve to. Players can play as facehuggers, runners, drones, praetorians, predaliens, and Queens. Marines/Corps can climb into exosuits. Preds can regenerate field energy as opposed to hunt the map for it.
The Primal hunt expansion gives headbite back to the predalien, dual pistols for the corporates, a shorter ranged but 360 degree motion tracker for corps, adds a sniper rifle for corps, allows predators to SELF DESTRUCT, adds a new class - the Ancient Predator, who uses the new weapon - the wrist flechette which is a low powered fast firing laser, cloaking has been changed so its a bit more noticeable.
Considering I played aliens to the point where I practically breathed and slept them I don't think the 'stand infront of them' silliness applies to me. The new super range motion tracker makes it kinda hellish to sneak up on marines, the grenades are so not exaggerated; it's not even funny. Def's a good shot and he'd often killing leaping aliens mid-air in a single well-placed shot with the rocket lau- uh, grenade launcher. I always went the runner alien just for the almost non-existant speed boost they have over the standard warrior types and experimented with the tail-whips, headbites and other aliens until I realised they'd not been hit with a nerf stick; they'd fallen from the top of the nerf tree hitting every brach on the way down falling in a crumpled heap where they were captured by nerf slave traders who nursed them back to a ragged nerf health before selling it off cheap. They then lived a nerf slave life under a nerf master and when they died a giant nerf tree grew fertilised by their nerf corpse where all their grandchildren repeated the nerf cycle.
The pred-aliens are the largest ones you can wall-climb with and stick out a mile away. The warrior alien is the same one out of the old AvP but they wrapped it in bubble-wrap incase someone got hurt (Like the steel-skinned marines for example). The runner alien has such a small speed increase and damage decrease it's almost not worth mentioning. Never tried the facehugger and chestburster because I'd been so sickened by the MP balance I never played it again. 2 Alien players playing so hard you can see them sweating against 2 marine players just mucking about and taking their time usually resulted in everyone dead except a fully healthy marine... and that's with the aliens being more than god-like. The tail-whip had most of it's damaged replaced with that crud 'I drank too much' stun effect which marines can still shoot in and headbites are almost never lethal against a marine who had enough of a clue to grab some silly armour and hp. I spent most MP games as a marine with 200 of both and aliens running the heck away from me. It was so bad that me and 3 preds were chasing this one marine who'd ran out of ammo... he got to the end of the passage and grabbed the smart-gun lying there. What did he see when he turned around? Me and the 3 other preds trying to run out the door getting jammed in the process; 4 preds mortally afraid of 1 marine... that's balance for you ^^
They had a lot of good ideas... the new weapons and classes and things like pred helmets getting knocked off is cool. It's just a shame that the marine is a walking god, the alien is a wimpering nerf monster even in the most skilled of hands and preds are just moderate... they're about the only balanced class in the whole frigging game >< Seriously... half the maps seem to be wide open air frag fests for the marines with grenades lying everywhere or close corridor frag-fests for the marines with flamers handy. The only reason I even managed to win the 'last man standing' thingy with 1 alien versus multiple marines (if a marine dies they turn to an alien... game keeps going until the timer runs out or everyone is alien) is because I had enough experience of dodging from the first one to hide in the huts while bullets and flame passed over me. I had to be the alien incarnation of vash the stampede just to survive for crying out loud =P The first marine kill would often take ages to get and only when the little team I was fighting (LAN game... 4 of us) made enough of a mistake to let me sit and pummel hell out of a marine I managed to stun. Sorry but the whole thing was just damn stupid and balanced by people who seem to think having a quake marine complete with the usual rocket launcher and body made of kevlar against a counter-strike CT/T with their 'die in a few shots' health, slower movement speeds and realistic weapons (a HMG? bwahahaha... it tickles for I am from QUAKE!!!) would be fun -.-
edit: can you tell this game touches a nerve with me?

The Exosuit in AvP2, the A.L.I.C.E., is basicly a quicker and larger version of the Powerloader with weapons, like Jssmfulhud said, but he missed the Flamethrower.
AvP2 single player is great online tho it's a bit of a let down, without broadband you cannot hope to play it and even if you do, the maps are tiny far far smaller than any of the NS maps most are about the size of the refinery room on bast to give you a rough idea. There is very little teamplay partly down to there being no voice comms in it or radio commands.
The smartgun doesnt track stationary targets, so thats not too bad if you're lurking in a nice spot.
Motion tracker only goes to the front (The Primal Hunt expansion's 360 tracker is reaaaaaaally short ranged) so if you're camped waiting for a passing rine, all the better.
Yes I realise it's not as easy as AvP or AvP Gold, but its more "in character" since in Aliens we see aliens getting torn up by pulse rifle fire, or in Resurrection we see a single headshot kill an alien. Leap then strafe clawing with a lucky headbite always seemed to work for me.
I've got no problem with dying easy, it was the same in AvP 1 (actually the aliens in AvP2 are slightly tougher) but there's no speed! You craaawl along at almost marine walking speed and when you do use your climbing abilities to get the drop on them you don't do enough damage. Seriously, I do headbites all the time on purpose and they almost never kill unless the marine's been through a heavy fight or isn't experienced enough to know he should be popping med and armour packs like their life depended on it. The alien slash would probably do more damage if it was changed to a limp-wristed slap -.-
Besides, the smart-gun's tracking isn't why people run away from it; it's the fact it shreds you even faster than the rifle =3
ahh good ol avp 2, if you guys decide to play it maybe i can reinstall and meet you guys for a game?

OMG that game was uber pwnage back in the day. I pumped so much $ into that game. Beat it twice in a row in one setting. :D
Oh and in regards to the topic on hand: AVP1 has technical problems running on modern day hardware & also has some software issues w/ 2000/XP so I'd say you're better off with AVP2 as it will probably... you know... work.
AvP Gold runs perfectly on XP as long as you use an OOOOOOOOOOOOLD bink file. The XP file changes the palette - not nice. An older bink file (find it on the avpnews website, for one) works ok. AFAIK you lose the movies, but you're not missing much.

Erm.... I think thats the most of it, really.
It's just a shame that the marine is a walking god, the alien is a wimpering nerf monster even in the most skilled of hands and preds are just moderate... they're about the only balanced class in the whole frigging game ><
Seriously... half the maps seem to be wide open air frag fests for the marines with grenades lying everywhere or close corridor frag-fests for the marines with flamers handy. I had to be the alien incarnation of vash the stampede just to survive for crying out loud =P
The first marine kill would often take ages to get and only when the little team I was fighting (LAN game...
Watch Aliens, you'll see Ripley use the Powerloader. The Exosuit in AvP2, the A.L.I.C.E., is basicly a quicker and larger version of the Powerloader with weapons, like Jssmfulhud said, but he missed the Flamethrower.
The alien slash would probably do more damage if it was changed to a limp-wristed slap -.-
Besides, the smart-gun's tracking isn't why people run away from it; it's the fact it shreds you even faster than the rifle =3
YES!
OMG that game was uber pwnage back in the day. I pumped so much $ into that game. Beat it twice in a row in one setting. :D
Oh and in regards to the topic on hand: AVP1 has technical problems running on modern day hardware & also has some software issues w/ 2000/XP so I'd say you're better off with AVP2 as it will probably... you know... work.
