:o i think its the ammo for a gun rather than the gun itself that slows you down, Altho when you are next to a wall, walk along it, holding sidestep into it, to gain some boost to your movement speed

You obviously never played against a good bhoper(like the "bunnyhoping muppets")

It's the gun and the ammo. You walk faster with less LMG ammo. Pick up an HMG and you will walk much slower than with an LMG and even more slowly with a fully loaded HMG. I think GL is about the same as HMG. I'm sure someone on here has the specifics.
• GlissGliss Join Date: 2003-03-23 Member: 14800Members, Constellation, NS2 Map Tester
It all depends on the weapon, amount of ammo, and HA.
For instance, if you had HA, and a fully loaded HMG, you would move a lot slower than you would if you just had an empty LMG. It's not noticable, but it's there.

yes, gun, ammo, and HA effect movement speed

if you wana test these things out you can play around with cheats (type in the con sv_cheats 1, bigdig, givepoints)

srop some HAs HMGs LOTS of ammo and watch as your speed changes when walking over stuff

I've never noticed ammo affecting your speed....but then again, I only get like 100 ammo max. It's probably not too much of a change either.

A bit off topic perhaps, but I love the strafejumping in Quake2 and Quake3.
If you're even a bit intrested, check out what it is like in Quake2:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/~gale/quake2/TJ_Carnage1.zip

.avi inside. Me doing some jumping on one map.
That's Action Quake mod for Quake2, and the damage is a bit closer to realistic than in normal Quake2. Let's say you jump down an amount in Quake2 where you lose 10 hp, in AQ you would lose 100 and die. If not, you at least cripple. So you gotta watch where you jump.

Too bad that HL doesn't have such jumping.
Thanks for the answers.

Kitsune wrote some stats AAAGES ago in 1.04, but nobody has seen him in ages.

If you search based on his username, you might find them.

Kitsune's weapon, armor, and speed stats are here, but they're outdated.

Both the weapon you are holding and the amount of ammo you have dictates your overall speed. Usually, when I am moving in hostle territory, I lead with my pistol for a small bit of extra speed.

If I need to rush to an area, I lead with my knife. I also wall strafe or strafe-walk (it's a special type of strafe walk) to boost up my speed.

Doesn't weight affect the JP? Or did they take that out without me knowing?
• ForlornForlorn Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2634Banned
For jetpacks, it's oppisite of how fast you walk;

the weapon nearly completely dictates how fast you lift, while your ammo count also wheighs you down some.

I think that's cool...I never noticed that weapons and ammo dictate marine speed.

I personally haven't noticed ha making rines slower in 2.x. I know it did in 1.x but I always seem to be able to keep up with the la until i get a hmg or something. Maybe I'm wrong though...?

And the bhopping muppets just means someone that can bhop, move around really quick, and be accurate while bhopping... right?

It means that if you really believe bunnyhopping belongs in this game then you most likely haven't seen just how ludicrously powerful it is for the select few who can do it extremely well.

Yet, this shouldnt happen, as whether you have your pistol out or not you still have the weight of the other weapons and ammo...

In 1.0 HA slowed you down a fraction barely noticable, it was the guns that slowed you to a crawl
• taboofirestaboofires Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9853Members
It's mainly the guns and ammo that slow you down. JP increases your mobility (and about the same walking speed), and HA's marginal speed decrease (if any) doesn't come anywhere close to making HA a tradeoff.

There is a considerable difference between speed with a full load of ammo and half full. Take notice, armory humpers!

Total weight seems to affect JPers much more than non JPers. As an example, get a GL and pistol full of ammo. Now, you will fly with the same thrust no matter what weapon you have 'out'. Now, drop your GL ... you'll get MUCH more thrust for the same fuel expendatures. Drop your pistol and get a little more. Now ... try dropping your knife ...
• ZdrozZZdrozZ Join Date: 2003-01-11 Member: 12158Members, Constellation
I read in a thread long long long ago that the knife out gives you a +5 speed bonus. But +5 is only ~ 3% more speed, I think it's not worth the risk to get ambushed and lose 0.1 seconds to change the weapons...

Even if you have a GL (oh and you can't drop your knife) and you pull out your knife, your thrust practically doubles.

Theres a guy on the SOM sever named Kisen(sp?) he was a gorge and B-hoped past 10+ sentrys and 3 HMGers and a Gler(all with ok to good aim) without takeing a hit. It was INSANE!. Then a gorge can out run a skulk its scary.

And unless your REALLY gota get somewhere the extra ammo is worth the speed loss, your not gona outrun a alien anway unless you got a JP. And full GL/Pistol ammo is a must unless you want to waste res on ammo packs. I remember hearing something with body armor "well it slows you down" "you think your gona outrun a bullet?"

Honestly all you need to bhop is a ramp going up or a vent heading up.
Strangely it just works.
Fun for me on ns_lost.

at least in 1.04, your framerate also affects your walking speed. Tested it myself. Wanna know how? No you dont. Well, i'll tell you anyway: remember r_drawviewmodel 0/1? well, that raises your fps by about 10 (well, when i used it, i got frames up from ~30 to ~40.dun care anymore, got a new comp.) . I was at shipping tunnel in ns_caged, the door was blocked, but not fully. I wasn't able to climb it up with r_drawviewmodel 1, but when i turned on r_drawviewmodel 0, well, I was able to slowly get up there
