:o i think its the ammo for a gun rather than the gun itself that slows you down, Altho when you are next to a wall, walk along it, holding sidestep into it, to gain some boost to your movement speed

It's the gun and the ammo. You walk faster with less LMG ammo. Pick up an HMG and you will walk much slower than with an LMG and even more slowly with a fully loaded HMG. I think GL is about the same as HMG. I'm sure someone on here has the specifics.
It all depends on the weapon, amount of ammo, and HA. For instance, if you had HA, and a fully loaded HMG, you would move a lot slower than you would if you just had an empty LMG. It's not noticable, but it's there.

yes, gun, ammo, and HA effect movement speed
if you wana test these things out you can play around with cheats (type in the con sv_cheats 1, bigdig, givepoints)

Both the weapon you are holding and the amount of ammo you have dictates your overall speed. Usually, when I am moving in hostle territory, I lead with my pistol for a small bit of extra speed.
If I need to rush to an area, I lead with my knife. I also wall strafe or strafe-walk (it's a special type of strafe walk) to boost up my speed.

I personally haven't noticed ha making rines slower in 2.x. I know it did in 1.x but I always seem to be able to keep up with the la until i get a hmg or something. Maybe I'm wrong though...?
And the bhopping muppets just means someone that can bhop, move around really quick, and be accurate while bhopping... right?

In 1.0 HA slowed you down a fraction barely noticable, it was the guns that slowed you to a crawl
It's mainly the guns and ammo that slow you down. JP increases your mobility (and about the same walking speed), and HA's marginal speed decrease (if any) doesn't come anywhere close to making HA a tradeoff.
There is a considerable difference between speed with a full load of ammo and half full. Take notice, armory humpers!
Total weight seems to affect JPers much more than non JPers. As an example, get a GL and pistol full of ammo. Now, you will fly with the same thrust no matter what weapon you have 'out'. Now, drop your GL ... you'll get MUCH more thrust for the same fuel expendatures. Drop your pistol and get a little more. Now ... try dropping your knife ...
I read in a thread long long long ago that the knife out gives you a +5 speed bonus. But +5 is only ~ 3% more speed, I think it's not worth the risk to get ambushed and lose 0.1 seconds to change the weapons...

And unless your REALLY gota get somewhere the extra ammo is worth the speed loss, your not gona outrun a alien anway unless you got a JP. And full GL/Pistol ammo is a must unless you want to waste res on ammo packs. I remember hearing something with body armor "well it slows you down" "you think your gona outrun a bullet?"
at least in 1.04, your framerate also affects your walking speed. Tested it myself. Wanna know how? No you dont. Well, i'll tell you anyway: remember r_drawviewmodel 0/1? well, that raises your fps by about 10 (well, when i used it, i got frames up from ~30 to ~40.dun care anymore, got a new comp.) . I was at shipping tunnel in ns_caged, the door was blocked, but not fully. I wasn't able to climb it up with r_drawviewmodel 1, but when i turned on r_drawviewmodel 0, well, I was able to slowly get up there
