Huh? Witchbot Oddities.

Witchbot is saving for Onos!
One of the threads in these forums recently said "learn to aim with Whichbot". So I said - well okay then.

So, I built up some marine defenses in the choke spots of a map, and played. Well, the Whichbot(s) (up to three) usually ran into my fire (and some turrets behind me - I want to aim, not die). This is when I decided to just cover in the starting room to allow the 3 whichbots full range of the map.

Here's what happened:
* One skulk visited my relatively early, and died. After that, no one came to visit me for a while (but I did visit them).
* While I had most RTs capped (and some electrified), they did not really bother expanding much. Apparently whichbot assumed that anywhere I have an RT is "my" territory.
* Once I removed all the RTs except for the one in marine start, they slowly started capping more, stopping at 5 (they must have all had 100 res anyway then) and built 3 hives. Good, no?
* Whenever I visited them, I saw the following opponents: skulk, gorge (one was a redeemer gorge. LOL), and onos (yes, whichbot saves for onos, and yes, it was a redeemer!).
* The skulk battled rather effectively
* The gorge used his spit almost exclusively, when his healspray could have been better in certain situations. Still gorgy boy did a good job, buildings were okay, too.
* Onos managed to kill me ONCE with stomp. Onos normally did not kill me. Also, apparently, the job of the onos is to guard the hive, and not attack anyway launching grenades at structures near the hive. (or the hive itself).

Since you can only have two more players in one team, I am stuck with 3 witchbots. They are fun to fight, but soon rather predictable. I would really like to duke it out with some lerks or fades, both of which are currently supported by whichbot, I think.

Any ideas what I am doing anything wrong?

Damn, I messed the title up - it's whichbot, of course. Silly me.

You can have more then that on a team
set mp_limitteams to something higher then 2
I believe thats the max difference between teams

Several games I have played against whichbots resulted in Lerks, for example in one game a WB rushed my base early on, died, then went gorge and built...I think 1 MC in the hive...then went lerk and spent the rest of the game attempting to fly through the roof of the hive. I don't think he ever touched the ground, and he didn't move either, until I killed him.

Another game WB went gorge immediately, never attacked my base, and took about 5 minutes before dropping his first RT. I think he spent the time in between spamming MCs in his hive, because when I got there there were 6 MCs in a row. When he finally saved up enough for hive 2, he walked into a hive that I was building turrets in, dropped the hive, and walked away. Needless to say, that was pretty easy to seige.

Thx, upping the limits helped a bit.
At one point, one onos and a skulk tried to attack the base together.

Fades don't seem to use blink - but the skulks can be pretty deadly, against a vanilla marine at least.

In games I have played with Whichbots I have found the biggest problems they have are with building and electrified buildings. Whichbots currently don't understand what electrification is and will continually suicide on an electrified RT. Gorges will cap res early but once all nodes on the map are capped they just seem to build some MCs in one hive and then stop. According to the website, bots are aware of electrification in the latest release, and support is in place for leap and blink though they aren't working correctly yet. I find it hard to believe that anyone saw a Whichbot lerk because lerks aren't supported. I have never seen a Whichbot lerk, ever, afaik they can't evolve to lerk at all.

The skulks however are excellent, they're fully capable of mauling even experienced human rines, and they dodge about quite well. Once they're leaping they'll be even more scary.

Just turn on cheats and turn on tourneymode. Tourneymode allows as many bots as neccessary to join, and with cheats you won't have to worry about getting res etc. 1v10 is a good number to have consistent encounters with at least 2 or 3 skulks. Once you've practiced enough (try using mp_drawdamage 1 during practice, btw) you'll find whichbot skulks to be pretty easy opponents.

P.S. Wouldn't be my thread that told you about the bots would it?

After I read this thread, I decided to get WhichBot and try it out. My game yeilded some entertaining results.

The game started off normal on ns_eclipse, dropped an IP, Armory, and the like, when the first skulk came in. I wasn't expecting it to be as skilled as it was, but it got me pretty quick. It then proceeded to take one bite out of my Comm Chair, then wander away. I respawned, dropped a TFac and some turrets, and various other things over time.

I took the Station Access res node, but they seemed rather protective of everything from Eclipse Command hive to S. Access. So I took the rest of the map and defended key areas with turrets. One bot remained gorge and continually hopped around the resourse node in Triad, and continued hopping in that area after I killed it a few times and took out the res node. It never put the node up again, just continued hopping.

One remained skulk the whole time, attacking my base over and over only to be shreded by my turrets. One went Onos a few times, but died each time it assaulted my base as I and the turrets fought it off. That and the fact that it didn't have any D-Chamber upgrades.

For some reason, the bots have a thing for mov chams, as I entered the hive area to find six of them, three groups of two, around the hive. All I had to do was sit on top of the hive and I was perfectly safe from harm, none of them figured to climb the walls and bite me, but instead circled the hive underneath me.

Eventually I got bored with controlling have the map, when they had only one res node, and while attacking one of the skulks the game crashed. Still pretty funny tho, rather relaxing game when compared to online play. All the while, that one gorge was still circling Triad res node.

Ok, to Cxwf: you must have been playing against RCBot, WhichBot never goes lerk right now.

Gorges getting stuck on res nozzles: this is a known bug right now. Basically, they're trying to go towards the resource nozzle and place the RT, but don't back off if they're too close.

Blink and leap support isn't in v0.7. Although I've been doing a little work on it, it's still not quite right.

Electrification understanding isn't in v0.7 either and it's on my list of things to do.

Played another game against three WBots, and oddly enough it was quite the opposite of the first.

On ns_eclipse again, they were a bit more aggressive earlier on, taking out any standing stuctures that weren't defended. The Gorge actually went around capping more res nodes, and began putting up the hives and defences inside. It even began bilebombing my res nodes, and I couldn't go to stop it because an Onos was there as well. Eventually the Onos came into my base, and it was attacking my starting resource node until I got out of the chair, when it promptly ran to me, stomping away, leaving me rather immobile. Thankfully it had redemption, and my turrets sent it away, but then a skulk ran in and bit me.

I went after a hive, thinking it would be clear like the game before, but there were many OCs and DCs in specific spots around the hive. All I had to do was sit on the hive and any skulks would circle underneath, rather than climb the wall to get me (same as last time). But after I knifed the hive to death and died from the OCs, I got into the chair and pinged the hive in time to see the gorge putting it back up.

Unfortunately I didn't get to finish the game, as I had forgotten I had Instant Messenger running, and chat window screwed the sound up, so I quit. But overall, it was a very different game than the first.
