how many people can is hold?
I have my 2.0 gig with 512 ram gf4 4600 running on a cable connection. Now I know this isn't the greatest idea but I don't feel like paying for a server or better connection. I've held up to 10 people so far. I'm wondering if it's possible to fit more....

Your rig can handle as many players as your bandwidth can handle. Find out what your upload bandwidth is. You need 3kbps upload bandwidth per player. You can actually squeeze in more than that, but it takes some messing about to do that.

Go to Speakeasy.net and run a speedtest to find out. My cable is 1.5m and it's upload is 260kbps... I can handle 10 players and that's about it.

I used to host a dedicated NS server on my cable connection, well, I did it for a week while I was in Puerto Rico (was the week of the blackout, you know the deal)

Btw, that was [FFT]International House of Nubcakes NSv2.01b [C-D REQ], great server, great mods. Everyone in my clan loved the server, and pings were great, all off of a cable connection.

Anyway, I use Optimum Online, which, while the company sucks, has a fast speeds, plus I'm the only person on the damn node, and I'm right near the (starting?) point of it, so even with a bunch of morons on my street having the seem service, I'd still have the fastest connection. GG unsaturated cable network.

Did a speakeasy.net speed test, 6023kbps down, 916kbps up...that explains the bitching speeds.

    Rig is a 2.4ghz P4, 1024mb ram.

Hopefully all of that information can help you get some of the facts about cable server.

You should be able to run a 12 player NS hlds on that setup easily.

Supposedly, changing to the alternate voice codec decreases bandwidth use, and also sounds better, I suggest you try that smile.gif
I've held 6 players (couldn't get anyone else to join) in CS on a dsl connection (768/128 (about 80kbps down, 20kbps up)) with sub 100 pings smile.gif

The standard for hl servers (lets base this on cs since I ran one for many years on a cable connection) is like 6 players for every 128kbps for the upload. You could support 12 but for best results just go with 6 players for each 128kbps you got. So like 384... go with 18.. Now since NS uses much more resources and network bandwith you will have to test this out with max players.. Basically have a few of your friends play.. like 1-5 with nothing build then just spam the place with buildings and then see what the ping is. Then just keep playing when the server is full and see what the pings are.. If you are getting a decent ammount of spikes or constant lag drop the player count by 2 every time.. Or more if you like.. But I wouldn't really go for any lower than 12 or 14 if you wanna have a fun ns server to play on.. Any less than that and the games just arent as fun... Also.. this is based on CS so NS is going to be very different so remember, this is an example from my server.. And mine was a 1gig p3 with 512 pc133 ram.. Nothing special but it did an awesome job!! With ns however you will obviously need something a bit better since it uses A LOT more resources with all the buildings etc etc.. One last thing, when you are looking to start an ns server.. check your upload rate.. Your download rate when running a server basically means **** since the average is 1.5mbps... And even 500kbps is decent but 256 (as advertised) for an upload is a min basically to have if you wanna try to run a server.. Anything less is like not worth it because it will lag and your player size will be small.. Now unless its just a few friends then heck.. anything can be fun with a few friends.. or on a lan.
