p.s. check out Battlefield 1942, it rocks.

p.s.s. don't look forward to multiplayer doom :( :( 4 player only, syncronious connection that most likely will require broadband...

p.s.s.s. Team Reaction said they were planning on doing Gloom 2 for DOOM III engine but now anymore :( :(

p.s.s.s.s. I got to talk to Rick Johnson from Raven about getting into the industry! ^_^ w00t!

Heh, I can't say I'm surprised about no, or little, multiplayer support on doom3. "They" have said numerous times that the engine is being specifically designed for singleplayer use. Still is disappointing to hear regardless.

At any rate, hope you had fun.

    Pictures. p0st teh p1cs!

On that mutiplayer Doom 3 front, when you have the single player that Doom 3 offers, is it really that much of a dissapointment?

    yes...

mainly because this was announced at quakecon, where people go to play multiplayer quake. not single player quake. and everybody there will migrate to doom 3...

oh and pictures will come soonish..

that was an unfortunate choice on their part. Multiplayer really seems the bread and butter of FPSs these days.

Yes, with the Quakes it has been, but doom was always about the single player (although it did kick off multiplayer gaming, though not as much as quake with quakeworld did) and half-life until the sdk came along was rated the best game of the year in over 50 publications not because of counter-strike or any other mod, but because of the single-player, people forget that and now with retail CS there are loads of people to which half-life just means the multiplayer, which I find sad because if you don't bother playing half-life single player you're missing a lot.

Also Quake4 in the works being multiplayer should keep multiplayer fans happy whilst I think it's good that DOOM3 is sticking to single player otherwise it would risk producing a second-rate single player because multiplayer was concentrated on (like Q2, which had sucky sp but the best deathmatch ever (I just about prefer it to Q3 cos of the engine physics and jumping)).

rick johnson of raven software was moderating the 2nd mod roundtable and so naturally he got the message from several of us taht while we can tolerate doom 3 not being a big multiplayer anything, with quake4 that would be unacceptable. after all, we were at quakecon, not to play single player games :P

Trouble is, it's hard in terms of deathmatch to improve on Q3, since it' basically Q2dm (though not quite as good as I mentioned below) with nicer effects and a more sensible Bfg (although the bfg in Q3 is less balanced than the bfg in Q2). It's really at a peak with DM, I don't see it getting better, and Q3 came with Q3CTF, it's hard really to improve on it, I think you'd have to really shake up what people think of deathmatch to top it, the graphics in Q3 are good enough that no amount of new rendering effects is going to make Q3 look like the graphics aren't good enough to play (especially since most the world still plays with the HL engine).

However I think Quake4 needs to be much more positive about deathmatch, too much is being lost to 'realism' or 'teamplay', there hasn't been a sensible deathmatch game other than Q3 for ages, HL deathmatch was so ###### it causes HLCTF HLJB and other DM spinoffs to not work in it either. But that doesn't matter, HL is single player, it was never meant to have good multiplayer, not until TFC came out.

I think Quake4 should really concentrate on engine physics, something I think Q3 didn't quite get right, and that's about it really, I do think there still is room for improvement when it comes to weapons, I think there still are 'redundant' weapons in Q3, although really only gren launcher falls into this catagory.

AI bots? Well I think DM bots are at a point where they are pretty solid, both in knowing how to act and acting realistically and vaguly like a human. I think that on a medium-high level that DM bots could pass the turing test (except for the incessant spamming )

It strikes me why release quake4? Not that many people play Quake3 (compared to HL/CS) and there is little you could do to improve either the gameplay or the engine.

Maybe Q4 is just a very good opportunity for deathmatch to fight back, to get people interested, afterall if it comes at a time when people finally start to get fed up of CS and HL mods then it could pick up a lot of people, although they'd prolly be noticable from the crouching in a corner

Another point is that Id are planning on making Doom 3 as easily editable as possible so it won't be too hard for the mod teams to make some nice multiplayer mods. So it's not a major loss, it's just that we have to work harder.

Surely even for mp mods it would need hte backing of protocols to deal with high number of people games etc, afterall no HL mod can take maxplayers over 32, and if doom needs synchronous conn, is that also like not having client-server gaming but having the 4 clients "dial in" to each other like doom2 was?

There would have to be a team of complete incompetent fools working at Id for them not to provide the same amount of community support that Valve does. This probably means lots of Doom 3 mods, including MP ones. Just because there is limited MP Doom 3 doesn't mean there will be no good MP mods.
