Ethics:
Banner reaction: ignore completely, if they aren't prevented by same methods as pop-ups (see next answer).
Pop-ups: prevent 100% using Windows' hosts file, the no-spyware version of Google toolbar, and/or Opera (alternative browser with built-in popup blocking)
How often I've stopped visiting a website due to ads of either type: never, though I have stopped visiting IGN and any other games site that I felt overused macromedia flash full-page ads, so count it as just 1 site I can name. Flash advertising is one type of ad not so easily prevented.
Preferred:
Content; I prefer to visit sites I trust to be more reliable news sources when I want to know what happens each day. The NS forums are the only place I go to on a more-than-daily-basis with forum(dynamic) style.
