Although, Otto, i'd recommend you try this, or another similar, to test your connection speed (Yes, i know it's a bit primitive). If you're consistantly going at speeds significantly* slower than you should be, i'd give your modem a test (Try it on another phone line with broadband / dialup access) or contact your ISP about it.

Try this again tomorrow, and a few times in between, then, as i said above, test your modem / router on another line (Take it to a friend's house or whatever) and if it's not that, then get on the phone to your ISP about it.
Well Otto, with a 256kb download, you won't really get any faster than 33kb/s...

I've gotten like 80k/s before. I'm guessing they switched our type of service without telling us about it. I'm not about to call them though (SBC Yahoo!) It took two weeks, and one ENTIRE day (not kidding, 12+ hours) on the phones to get them to fix their mistake and get us hooked up correctly. The entire time they blamed me. *Edit*

Sorry, missed the 512kb/s part... /bangs head on table
And wow... I'm glad the ISP is so good here. Everything that we got was a constant price but the speed doubled in the past months...
EDIT: And yes, change the ISP. I mean, they have no right to let you pay the same price, yet lower the speed drastically.
Well, I'm probably not in the same area as you, Otto, but I had SBC Yahoo DSL, with a similar plan and although my speeds were higher than that, I thought their customer service sucked as well and I experienced many, many down times. Switched to Comcast Cable a few months ago and 1.672 Mbps (213.98 KBps) is what I get now according to that test thingy. I think it's about time SBC gets its act together. Try contacting other ISP's to see if they're coming to your city/township/village anytime soon.
