Mouse Turning Off?!

Up until a week ago, NS was running just fine on my computer. But I started running into this problem just today, after a week or so of not playing. The only thing I know of that has changed is updating Cheating Death from 4.4 to 4.5--but when I tried without CD it still happened.

So, here is the problem. Periodically while playing the game, NS turns off my mouse. It no longer responds to mouse buttons or scrolling the mouse, and the mouse itself no loner recognizes that it is scrolling. It is an optical mouse, and whenever I move it normally, the red light reflection from the laser becomes much more visible, but now its not happening.

This has never happened to me while I was not playing NS (I tested some other games just to see), and I don't play any other half-life mods so I don't know about those.

When the mouse first stops responding, it usually plays a little tone, similar to the one that AIM plays (by default) when you send or recive a message. When it starts responding again, it usually plays the tone again (but slightly different, the same way the AIM send tone is different from the recieve tone).

The problem persists when I quit out to the main Halflife menu, but goes away when I turn Halflife off completely.

Any ideas?

    I'm guessing you're on WinXP?

If so that "tone" you're hearing is the USB (or just hardware) connect/disconnect sound. Make sure the mouse is connected the the port as best it can be.

Yes I am on WinXP, and yes it is a USB mouse. I'll try that, but I don't think I'm pulling the cord out or anything.

Update: I have examined it a bit more closely, and here is the results.

The cord is not the problem, and fastening it more or less tightly, even while the mouse is giving problems, has no effect.

When NS turns the mouse off, it turns completely off, and even the idling tracker light goes off. However, this light will flicker back on once every few seconds, and after several flickers it finally turns on and stays on and then the mouse works again.

Again, the mouse never gives me problems in any other applications.

Update: For the first time, the mouse flickered off when I wasn't running NS. It still seems to be connected to the game though, but I will try to borrow someone elses mouse to see if that fixes it.

Update: I borrowed a friend's mouse, and there weren't any problems at all. So apparently my mouse is just breaking. I guess I'll have to get a new one.

Tried updating mouse drivers before going off the deep end and compltely replacing the mouse? Unless it's a generic one, then you can just ignore this.
