Tips please?
Alright, i'll just say it. I am probably one of the worsts commanders ever. So i'd like some tips on it. No flaming please.

If you don't have a microphone, get one. You might feel like a total goober, but lets face it, everyone sounds like a total goober over voice comm. IMO, commanders that don't talk over their mics suck. There are some that are good without it, but you can only do so much with waypoints, and stopping to type out your plans can mean immenent death for your marines. I feel like I could be a pretty decent commander, but I have yet to command one game yet because I feel that without a mic, well, it wouldn't be worth me even trying.
Also, try to stay calm. Good commanders never lose their cool.
"4. Watch good commanders and try to understand what they do and why."
This is very important. Playing as a marine alot and watching what the commander does, how he commands his troops, and how he places his structures, can be very useful when starting to command. Nothing annoys me more than a commander who doesnt take into consideration his base placement. Don't place infantry portals right next to the armory. People tend to get telefragged. Also, make sure your armory can be reached from all sides. It sucks when only two people can get ammo at a time because you placed your armory in a corner, or in a jumble of other structures.
Good luck with your commanding!
Edit: Oh also, you might want to start a LAN game by yourself to get better at placing your structures, and trying new things. To allow yourself to drop structures, without anyone on the opposing team, create the game, then join marines, open your console, and type "sv_cheats 1". It does change the build times however, so an infantry portal will build much MUCH faster with sv_cheats on. However, its the only way to practice by yourself that I know of, so bleh.
All good stuff. As above doa few searches to find hints/tips/strats etc....
However.

QUOTE

its the only way to practice by yourself that I know of, so bleh.

Sorry not true IMO I started to comm using RCbot and wbBot on at same time in 4v4 (just me and a mix of bots). Now dont get me wrong they are not very clever when you compare them to human players, but.... Marines will : Build things for you (you dont always need to tell them to) Follow waypoints Ask for orders Tell you when they find aliens. and the Aliens will : Setup res towers Setup hives (even the odd OC!!). Use other alien types
I personaly would advise you to update your NS to same version as servers (add any little files you need) then install some bots (like the ones above) and dont bother with the _cheats command, but this is just me. NOTE Bots only work on some maps unless you set up waypoints etc, but thats for another time. Basic bots should be enough for you to get a feel for it.
The best thing about this is that you can practice with some enemys and some troops (albeit rather stupid ones) to moan at you and see your mistakes (though nothing beats the real thing).
I tell you there was a time where I had setup base (a few buildings) killed a few rushing skulks and was felling rather buff with myself so setout to have a look around on my own. Making my way to where I thought the hive was I opened a door only to be face to face with an ONOS!!! who ate me on the spot!! Ya see the thing is if anyone ever found out I was eaten by an onos bot I would never ba able to live it down but as it was a lan game with no real players nobody will ever need to know..... hang on......wait a minute..... forget I said that and NO BODY READ THIS !!!
LOL. You get the picture... [P.S. it did actualy happen ]
As soon as you get the hang of it move onto servers is best advice. (you can always pop back to test stuff at later date). Anyway happy hunting/commin and hope to see you in the killing fields soon.
Finally Both methods are usefull using sv_cheats 1" (nice and simple to setup) or taking time to use bots (quite easy to setup - a bit of cut and paste needed)
*edit* Somehow posted it all in bold so fixed it
SLOW down. I want to know how to use these bots with the latest version of NS... because I need comm practice ASAP.
Don't panic, and keep an open mind. If you're original strategy is not working, don't be afraid to abort it, and go some where else. A lot of commanders feel that if they have phasegate up by a hive feel they ABSOLUTELY must attack the hive, even if its bad posistion, or they don't have enough hardware to penetrate the area. This could involve a stalemate, which ultimately the marines lose.
While you are attacking, always do 2 things at once, meaning when you are attacking the hive, either attack their nodes, or recap your own (if they don't have any to breakdown). Recapping allows more res to provide equipment and meds for your troops, and also if your attack fails, its easier to save for another attack because you spent the res on nodes.
Getting your troops to take down their nodes is crucial, because it is a lot harder for an alien RT to be replaced, then a marine RT.
Don't panic Don't tell those OMG HOW I GET GUN WTH!!1! people to shhhh just ignore them. Look at and remember what a good comm does on your favorite server. Learn which tactics work on what map and which don't as a grunt. I see too many comm's giving up if they suck at the beginning, keep practising and use a random name if you are afraid to get flamed
The most important thing is give the aliens the impression that they are under attack at all times. If you do it right they should only be reacting to your offensives and not doing anything of their own. I know one commander who does perfectly fine ....gets full upgrades and ha and loses because they have no ability to keep the pressure on the aliens. I.e. going after one spot on the map when the whole alien team have arrived to defend and are dug in. Do not be afraid to step away from battles, if your not making any progess drop it and hit them from another direction. By far the most important is to allow them no time to mount an effective defence anywhere or time to stop and launch a strategy of their own.

if u have a hive and ms and aliens wipe out ms, they probebly thing that the 2 ip's u got in ms are the only ones, so show them wrong!
