if you havent done the smoothing, show the model in flatshade view instead <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Man, that is AMAZING for a first model. do you have any idea what MY first model looked like? I dont even want to remember, unfortunately I do.. and It makes me cry. Anyway. All youve really gotta do Is put more detail into the Back and top of it and your pretty much good, also, Try to ease up on the polygons If you wanna put it in a game... Im assuming it has alot of polygons, cause New modellers always kinda Pile on the polys. Anyway, Yeah, Like I said, Put some more detail into the back and top and Thats basically it.. Dont just model a gun from the side. Good Job M8.

well basically smoothing kinda make selected faces and makes em look blended together. You just have to choose the face you want to smooth and assign smoothing groups. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

*i think someone made a smoothing tut in here or something, but it was wayyy back

whats the polycount on this? smack me if its been sed.

Thanks wolf, I will work on the top and back a little more, and about the poly count, I have no idea what it is supposed to be at, or even the right way to get it, but the "Selpolycount" from milkshape was

    Polys 4068
    vertices 2175
    distinct vertices 1908

I'll try to clean up the handle a little, and I have no real idea on what smoothing is other than what the name suggests, or how to do it really. Any help anyone could give would be great. If I can get this in decent shape, maybe I'll try to skin it next, or if anyone else wants to try, lemme know

p.s. I should also mention that this model includes an elongated barrel, shell ejection chamber, and a full clip in the grip should it ever be animated
  • BrigadierWolfBrigadierWolf Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16876Members, Contributor
Yeah, see, 4068 is WAY too high for a HL model.. You really want to stick around 2000.. My models that Ive been releasing for NS have been about 1000 polygons, because I dont want people to get hidious slowdown. I could easily make them 3000 or more for a better engine. Anyway Try to make the polygon count as low as possible without sacrificing too much detail... remember, most details can be put uin the skin and dont really have to be modelled

    Nice!
I like it. Now if someone can give it a TSA skin it will look great.
Also maybe its just me.. Is the ejection port on the wrong side?
Shouldn't it be on the right.
  • NikonNikon Join Date: 2003-09-29 Member: 21313Members, Constellation
Im working on reducing the poly count, and should i leave in the clip/extended barrel/shell ejection for animation? im sure those are some of the reason for the large polys.

it shows on both sides, ill show a picture of the reference i used when i get a lower poly model to show
  • NikonNikon Join Date: 2003-09-29 Member: 21313Members, Constellation
here are the new pics of the new model with half the poly's, its as low as i could get it without seriously putting dents in it. also, the reference pic is down here too

Grip needs to be cleaned up a bit, but otherwise very good.
  • NikonNikon Join Date: 2003-09-29 Member: 21313Members, Constellation
ya, i know...... me and the grip have................ 'issues'.
I had a really nice looking one, but it was almost 1000 polys in itself........ im working on it, but taking it down to 300 polys makes it hard to make it smooth
