Ns - not only basing on the alien movies?

<div class="IPBDescription">6 (sic) 6</div>i read, that natural selection is based on a lot of ideas of the alien-movies. but i think there is a game where you can find a lot paralels!
it's a mod for quake 2 an it's called gloom   !!!!
well, i played gloom before a long time, but it still rocks. if you can't wait for natural selection, get gloom
when i first visited this site, i thought ns is even developed by the gloom team, as its based on the same principes. but the commander-view isn't in gloom.
@mod-team: great work, the commander-view rox!

well, anyone knows gloom?
anyone of the developers of NS knows gloom? well, if not, then i simply won't believe it.

greet-x

Err trust me people, NS is NOTHING like gloom.  Sure the concept may seem the same, but it's not, gloom is much different.

sure gloom is something totally different. gloom is action and NS is rts
btw: is it the same with the classes like in gloom, where you can decide what class you get determing on your frags?
btw2: how many classes are there?

Please pretty please snoop around <a href="http://www.natural-selection.org" target='_blank'>http://www.natural-selection.org</a>, <a href="http://www.readyroom.org" target='_blank'>http://www.readyroom.org</a>, and these forums - read the FAQs in each section, and use the <a href="http://www.natural-selection.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=Search;CODE=00;f=1" target="_blank">"Search"</a> function.  Most of what you're asking has already been answered about a dozen times.

    Welcome to the community!  (:

    NS isn't an RTS either <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->  It's only part RTS, Commander Mode.

Also, there are NO classes, the commander purchases you upgrades/weapons/health and everything you need in battle.   Like i said, almost completely different <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

RTS doesn't mean top-down view.  The aliens are experiencing as much of the RTS deal as the commander.  Resource management and procurement, upgrade and evolution selection, and many other aspects of life as an NS alien are staples of traditional RTS games like Starcraft as well.  <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

    ok

i'm looking forward to the day NS will be released. is there someway i can get a mail?
    i haven't seen a newsletter or something

how is the gameplay with 2 ppl? will it be like one is hiding (alien) other one is searching?
i read something bout the commander-view: is it true that when you are in commander-view, you will shoot automatically? isn't this a little unfair?
and i saw some pics. will the crosshair really be as big as it was shown? lot questions, and more coming, even they might be answered...
will a CS-player or a Q3A-player have more fun and advantage in NS? (example: a Q3A player has more advantages in UT then in CS)

    Bah! greedo, i'll cut you!  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Kalle, there are a few things you need some info on, hehe, so i'll start.

    1. You can find out about NS's release by checking here along with screenshots and news: <a href="http://www.readyroom.org" target="_blank">The Readyroom</a>

    2. Playing with 2 people is the same as how it would normally be, your objective is to make it so neither team can spawn and all the members of the team are dead.  That means the marines killing the alien hives and the aliens destroying all the marine infantry portals and command centers.

    3. The thing you are talking about is OVERWATCH.  This is basically an AFK defense mechanism so if you go off to get a drink you have a higher chance to actually be living when you get back. It isn't unbalanced. (that corsshair is ONLY active while in overwatch)

    4. Only 1 person can be the commander, they are the lifeblood of the marine team, they give ammo/health/weapons/buildings and everything, so it's a vital class. (this is the top-down view)

    5. There is no commander for the aliens, its a evolution system between 5 classes that you can evolve with through the use of Resource Points.  Each class has different abilities and a totally different play style.

Hope that helps, and remember to read the FAQ's all over the place!

thx a lot, ill check the page out, looks good

will it be attractive to play as a commander? i mean, always playing in this overview... it's nothing for ppl (Like me) who want action. brutal bloody action.
and how will the commander will be chosen? is there someway to vote a single person?
  • Relic25Relic25 Pixel Punk Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 39Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
The commander isn't chosen.  He volunteers.  A player becomes commander by 'using' the command station.  So if the role doesn't appeal to you, you never really have to play that role.  Also, before it's asked again, yes, the plan is to enable the others to vote down a bad commander.

Actually, for me, its similarities to Gloom was a selling point, something to draw me into its fold, and show me a game that can demonstrate to the world how teamplay should be.

Yes, Natural Selection is similar to Gloom.  But at the same time, it's similar to Starcraft, Half-Life, and AvP.  And then it slaps them all over the head with a rolled-up newspaper and runs off, screaming into the night.  Read all that you can find here and the places others have named.

The best part about this game?  Frags don't count.  How well your team is doing does.

You just hit the nail on the head...

And also being an alein can be looked at as an rts depending on how stricly you think of an rts. A tradtional rts is C&C style top down over head veiw produce units, gather resources etc. However rts is short for Reat Time Statgy, which can be applied to a lot of games, and NS fits in that catagory for aleins in a few aspects...

well real time strategy goes to almost every game cuz theres alwase strategy u could go runign aroudn shootign everything but if u dotn take cover think of a plan or where the enemy is ur dead

    Thank you Imperial Fist.

I shall now Translate to Punctuated English:

Well, Real Time Strategy (or RTS), goes to almost every game that exists due to the fact that you must use atleast some amount and form of strategy in any game. For instance, in First Person Shooters (FPS), even the simple action of shooting the enemy's body is a use of strategy. You used the strategy that, to destroy your opponent, thus winning the battle, you must first aim at the opponent, then attack. Most intelligent FPS Gamers also know it is wise to take cover, thus minimizing the amount of damage they take, and thus making their goals that much easier to obtain.

Heheh well done, Jedisar!  Very well translated.  You've made it so much easier for the rest of the forum  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

will NS also enable the voice chat?  can the commander talk to "his soldiers"? or how does he communicate with them. i know that there are orders given by the commander.

i think the commander can view all enemys that are in range of the soldiers, right? and in NS are a lot dark rooms, right? so if the commander can talk with his soldiers, he can tell them, if there is an enemy hiding in the dark, ever thought of that? or do u already solved this problem?

If anyone has ever played Battlezone 1 or 2 NS is very similar to it in game type.

Voice Communication is in, and from what I hear, VERY much used.

And I believe it was said that the commander can see any alien the marines can see..however, I may have heard wrong, or this may have changed.
