Location commands

<div class="IPBDescription">Query...</div>Hello, <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I have lurked in these forums for a while but just recently decided to join this lovely community. First off, I know you all have heard this many times, but I am amazed at the revolutionary quality to this mod and would like to congratulate the developers as well as anyone else that has helped with its creation.

However, I do have a query...

I do not especially like using the Half-Life voice comm but I am also not a rigorous typer while playing a game. So what I was wondering, will there be any location commands that will be able to bind to the config file?

Ex: bind ‘x’ ‘say_team I need help at (L)!’

Would come out as: “I need help at the water hive!” (or whichever location you are in)

This would also work with telling team members your health or ammunition status.

I know this option has already been implemented with the <a href="http://ahl.telefragged.com" target="_blank">Action Half-Life</a> Mod but I think that it would work quite well for Natural Selection.

(Forgive me if this has already been discussed.) :|

I like that idea. Someone else had an idea like that. It was to have your name right next to your location. That way if you were at "Docking Bay" it would come out:

    JediYoshi(Docking Bay): /me needs help

Something like that. But that seems quite good too. And, welcome to the forums.

well, thats not a bad idea, but Flayra wants to make NS as newbie friendly as possible.

Not all new people will know how to bind, or even know about the console.

Perhaps a location system such as the one Jedi suggested would work best.

I like that idea, but it hink the way JediYoshi explained it would be the best implmemtation.  This system has been used in QIII and is very useful.

Oh, and welcome to the community!

its a great idea having the location next to the name
then you just have to say "Hey I have a big lvl 5 in front, some help please??" and pple will help you ;P. just joking.

Seriously, it would be a good idea, both of them.

I would go as far and call such a feature essential for team communication, especially for those without voicecom. Even better than location names would be a uniform coordinate grid for the map.

Collateral - I don't know about you, but grid coordinates would give me a headache trying to figure out just where the hell to go in the map. Room names are more intuitive, you learn maps after a while.

well, with a small HUD addition, grid coords can work.  Next to the location name (in parens) have the coordinates that change as you move.  That way you can have a much easier time with those coords.

Yes... like the %i, %h, and %a commands in TF, the %l command could replace itself with the name of the area you are in.

All you'd have to do is have it display the name of the closest info_location.

the location idea is cool, but the grid one its too complex.......

Besides, with the info_location entity, it won't be too hard to implement the code for the place names.

    The Front Line Force way:

    Joey (57, A Crate): HELP!

    bind x "say_team HELP!"

Using MM2 (teamtalk) automatically appends your health and location to the message.

The thing is ,doesn't the commander have a big map and all the marines have a small map.  I think this wouldn't help alot. Also the commander can send waypoints to marine.  Other than that it would be a nice feature.

If you have tooltips enabled, there are benefits such as point of attack locations in meters and etc.  Maybe we will see something along these lines in beta 1. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

so tooltips and waypoint additions are the same option?  I don't really like that...  I would love to have the additional information on the waypoints, but after a few games would likely turn off the tooltips.

I'm siding with Gwahir on that one.

And I love the idea of putting the location next to the name, just as long as it's a cvar you can turn off.

I dont think that location commands are necessary because I dont think smart players are gonna be running off in the direction of an alien attack unless they like being bob feed. But, maybe the aliens have some small use for it, when they arent gibbing marines.

Uhh guys? The right click menu is likely to have all this stuff in there already. Download and view the Valve Expo video (Don't know link, somewhere on rr.org probably) to see a basic version of it in action. Sorta an inbetween for people that don't like to type nor use voicecomm.

Incidently, why don't you like to use it Unsound?

Arg... i did not say tooltips and waypoints are the same thing.  STOP assuming.  I was only saying that tooltips give you more of a display of where point of attacks are, what do you think the point of them are?  Waypoints are there either way, and they are one of your most trusty things.  This is how RUMORS get started, please do not assume things, if you have a question about it, just ask. Don't assume and think you know. It saves everyone time.

If this was directed at me, I know.  It just sounded like turning off tooltips also turns off the distance indications on the waypoints.

yes, we did not assume loss of waypoints, rather the loss of the information tacked onto them.

How about you just make it so that the radar blip flashes when they chat, the same way it does for radio commands?  Seems kinda silly to discriminate between the two.
