Soo Nice

- a Linux Story
now, before you flame me, do take into account that this is my first time installing linux... ever
now, here's why i did waht i did...
RedHat - it took me 13 hours to download 3 megs... so i canceled that and well, trashed the idea of RH9
Slackware - it was recommended to me by a friend, after scaring myself to death, i stopped installing it because i had NO idea what i was doing.
Mandrake - it took me 8 hours, got all 3 CDs, and it installed perfectally.
now, i'll let you in on a secret, you think your windows junk is nice, but you haven't tried linux yet... i've yet to discover the full potential of this operating system, mostly because i'm operating in the GUI...
Linux is KINDA like a hybrid of windows 95 and windows XP/NT.... lotsa graphical secksay stuff up front for the nubs, and still a powerful back end for the more adventurous....
there is my linux story, care to share yours?

I am an avid linux fan. However I don't use it much. GenToo would've been better. Its linux on-cd so no install...but learning to install is the basis for the tons of unix that a good linux system needs.
Problem 2) Slackware is for mid-experienced Linux users. It's more powerful, but it's not user friendly when it comes to setup. You need to know what you're doing, and there's no pointy-clicky untill (unless?) you set it up. Some argue that Debian is better, but I prefer Slack's attention to newer packages, rather than solely going for the tried-and-true. Experienced users will likely go with LFS (Linux From Scratch.. make it yourself), Gentoo, or my favorite, Sorcerer.
Problem 3) You didn't download from www.linuxiso.org who have a large number of fast mirrors. RH9 would have been downloaded a LOT faster, as I get the feeling the main RH site caps their download rates in a passing effort to both conserve bandwidth and nudge casual users toward just buying a boxed copy.
On an additional note, I *hope* you went with LILO instead of GRUB. The latter is a PITA to fix if it ever breaks. LILO... well.. is COMPREHENSIBLE.
gotta go through steam install ALL OVER again....*grumble*
