1. Learn all the maps by heart. Not all the roomnames but the general layout. 2. Know how to place buildings, and defend them 3. Learn when to drop medpacks 4. Learn how to siege 5. Know how to counter what(SCs, Fades etc.) 6. Learn when the time is right to uppgrade or hand out weapons.
about the biggest tip i could give is res res res! secure as much res as possible as long as you have a decent number of nodes marines should win. 3 nodes will get you HA researched and a couple of HA suits but it wont be fast. 4 or more and you can have HA almost ready by the time the first onos shows up.
when you get marines to cap a node possibly leave 1-2 marines defending a node until its upgraded to electrifired res it costs 30 res to do but well worth it. i cant count the times ive seen marines cap a node move on to the next only for a skulk to eat the res they just capped.
the armory i try to get upgraded as early as possible when they say it takes ages to upgrade to advanced armory they aint kidding 3 and a half minutes which doesnt seem like long but if u wait to do it when u need to do it then it may be to late.
when you do get heavy armour upgraded make sure to mix up your arms in the HA squad some with HMG's some with Shotguns, and if its a large game then possibly 2 grenade launchers but you should only need 1.
be sure to stay with ur HA squads keep them stocked with ammo, if u wait for them to call for ammo it may be too late. armouries are nice and cheap at the oment so i normally drop them a few clips of ammo and an armory at the same time when they are coming to a place where they will have to do alot of shooting.
commander prediction will keep ur troops alive. and any information you can get from the battlefield will help so if you can afford it get motion tracking, but it is a luxury and i wouldnt think of getting it unless either i had 5 or more res nodes or aliens go sens first.
upgrades - make sure you research level 1 armour first this will allow ur marines to survive an extra skulk bite before dieing. then go guns until lvl3 guns is obtained this will cost you 90 res but lvl3 guns is most definatley worth it!
another important point is dont react to aliens make them react to you. keeping the alien under pressure means they arent elsewhere in the map causing trouble.
obviously to know the maps, the buildings, the interfaces is good. So practice on a local game, maybe with bots or friends. You can set cheats on if you want.
I've been thinking about a command school. Maybe this could be a mode for Natural Selection, like Combat. Maybe you can creatively do this in vanilla NS. But imagine a thriving community of learning servers. TSA training stations.
