<div class="IPBDescription">errr....ya</div> A while back, I started making this pistol, as something to learn off of to learn modelling. So here is the result of my best work so far:

<img src='http://moo.xhibitreign.com/sidepistol.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://moo.xhibitreign.com/frontpistol.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

<img src='http://moo.xhibitreign.com/backpistol.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

I'm gonna go try and find the post where I got the concept from...

    very.. very.. flat.

    Select the Flat faces on the back and front of the handle and extruder themOut a bit, then make them thinner than the rest of the model, This way the handle looks rounded off as opposed to painfully square..
    I suggest using this for other areas as well. Also, I am the master of all things orange.

    Oooh, thats a good idea brigadier, but I have a lot of trouble selecting stuff...lets just say it took me a hour to do the crosshairs <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Any easier way to select them in MS3D?

    What they said really, looks nice though, just a tad...Square?

    There's a nice MS plugin you might find handy btw.( Dunno about you, but I always found the lack of a proper "Select stuff in 3D view" option to be the single worst thing about Milky..)

    Found it, you want MSSelectionEditor, it's about halfway down the news page..

    <a href='http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/' target='_blank'>http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/</a>

    Not perfect, but might be of some use, now available in DX8 flavour as well...

    Well, at the moment(as its still square) the poly count is 758. I'm aiming for a max of 1000, and I plan on puting some rounders on the cylinders on the side of it.

    No probs, I didn't find it, I think Del ( was it? dunno.. ) posted it ages ago but newer forum monkeys might not have seen it, and it <i>is</i> a fix for the major weakness in Milky....

    Sorry for all my dbl posts...just trying to make sure people see this.

    Ok, heres my new problem: Using Brigadiers way of smoothing out the handle, I end up with a ton of backfaces...and its quite apparent in the 3D view. Now, The problem is, some of them are true backfaces, some aren't, and its too hard to tell which. How to get rid of?

    ... You dont need a plugin to select edges. Its very easy. Goto select, and check "By vertex", that means you select a vertex and it will select all the faces connected to it. Now, What you do, Is go to the side view, and select the edge that you want to extrude. It will also select faces you dont wat. Hold shift, and select the faes you dont want to extrude using the RIGHT mouse button (As in Mouse 2). This will deselect those faces. Once you only have the faces you want selected, then you can extrude.. Selection Editor.. Bah.

    And.. backfaces? I know what those are, But I dont quite follow you on how you wound up with so many, Unless you used a massive amount of vertices in the original curve of the handle.

    Honestly Wolf, it's a handy lil plugin. I'm fully aware you are "Ninja modeller" guy, and you could you probably do most of these simple operations in your sleep, but I think a lot of newer peeps would find it easier to just select the things in 3D, same way most model proggys work..

    Still, that's both the good and bad thing about this whole gfx thing, there's always at least 3 ways to do something..

    /shrugs

    Actually.. I dont use MS3d anyway.. But I have, so i figure Id give some tips.. anyway, Yeah, some kinda plugin is probably good.

    Most of the cylinders in the front probably wont even be visible in the v_ model, so you should either remove them or make them like 5 sided cylinders..

    Actually, being this is MY learning project, I'm gonna be doing EVERYTHING from scratch. I'm talking from here to animation, I wanna know how to do it, so I can say that I honestly am a accomplished modeller.

    Brigadier, THANK YOU FOR GOD'S SAKE! I've been trying to select by vertexes forever, but didn't realise there was a way to do this....YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!

    One peice of advice i can give you is to stop modeling ONLY with 2 of the viewport.
    You'll always end up making boxy models that way.
    Me, once i do something in a view in MS3D, i always rotate around the model in the perspective to get a better feel for the overall look of the model.

    Your model looks like you made it all in the LEFT and FRONT viewport. Bad way to work.
    You have to be able to visualise the whole model and think of the "DEPTH" of the model in ANY viewport.

    MS3D is crap like that.
    It can give you a REALLY big mess of polys for no reason.
    Thats why i only swear by 3D Studio max ( ANY version) since you can edit all you want DIRECTLY from the 3D Perspective!

    Well, I can't learn 3DSM, because I'll find the extrude button...then next time it isn't there. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    If there is a converter from MS3D, I'd convert, and use that from here...but...ya.

    WTH happened? Milkshape isnt that hard to use... you just have to select the right faces... i can tell you right now thats user error because i've never gotten anything looking that bad.

    Well, this time I KNOW FOR A FACT its milkshape. I had EVERY SINGLE FACE selected on that damned handle, and it refuses to have them all be extruded. ::shoots chabulum::
