Well...?
I been thinking about NS + what is to come. Out of curiousity what does everyone think if NS was to become a standalone game.
Please dont flame just if you like the idea say why and if you dont say why. Pretty simple:
As Standalone: I feel that it would allow the dev members to fix many things. It would allow them to change the engine and make it to their liking. They could add alot of new objects and release a very nice game.
As a mod: Its free, its fun, alot easier then starting from a basic engine.

NS will not become a standalone product unless Flayra is hired on by VALVe, and even then, he would still have NS be a 100% free game as long as you have HL/HL2(if he decides to port/remake). He is dedicated to the mod community, and what they expect- free.
Not to mention, sci-fi stuff doesn't sell well, so it'd be a waste

What says valve? And what says he would rather it be free?
Don't assume. Kthx.

I'm not assuming, nub.
Try reading the FAQ on the main site.

Not at this point. The team would love to get more involved with VALVe, but there is no formal affiliation or arrangements at this time. VALVe does help the team from time to time with information about the SDK and the Half-life engine.
Will I ever have to pay for NS? Will we ever see NS on Steam?
Natural Selection will always be free. We are working with VALVe to get Natural Selection on Steam.

Besides, making a once-free mod pay-only would be a poor business decision. One of the things that makes the mods fun is how easy it is to find a game to play. Going retail only would alienate plenty of players, reducing the chances of having a good game going, and it would probably also reduce the number of people who pay good money to host a server. Being free is part of the appeal, and they'd be better off charging for better servive/content/etc. instead of charging for the right to play it. Valve knows this, as is evident by their mod-supporting actions.
