Whens steam taking over?
I just got a new computer so of course I had to reinstal HL and NS2.0. Of course if you don't have WON ID, you won't be able play on-line, so I will have to go reactivate my WON ID so its cookieed to my new comp. I was woundering is it even worth bothering when Steam is taking over fully soon?

I did a search on "WON ID" for a ,month, only got this:

QUOTE

You can d/l steam now just be careful you read the multiple choices, I didn't and steam kindly condensed and hid my files in its own directory. I have to (and have) re-installed everything to the sierra half-life directory to be able to play online through ASE. Without re-install I get/got the message saying no files found or some such.

What I mean is at the end of d/l steam it wishes to install, it gives you a number of choices along the way. One choice is to condense/combine all half-life/valve files into one directory hdd space (for me) 1gb, the other choice was to save old files and to make a separate directory for steam 4.5gb, I wish now I had taken the option to create a separate directory.

Steam combined the files and stopped me being able to play on nearly 2/3 of the servers I previously played on.

    BEWARE your choices.

    d/l here. http://www.ausgamers.com/files/details/html/8298

WON is leaving whenever they get Steam bug-free.
... and don't listen to the people that reply to this saying "oh puHHLeeZZZZZ! they'll do it whenever they want to because theyre nazis!" The fact of the matter is that WON will leave whenever 99% of the people can get onto the system and play with minimal errors.

if i was you i would just stick to standrard half-life on wonid for now, just load up the game like you normal would enter your cd key and you go i only reinstalled hl last nite and still works

as for steam the longer i dont have to use it the better cos it uses up 20meg of memory on stand by and around 50 - 90 meg when u play a game that of course doesnt include when half-life is running which is 230meg

my machine runs lots of stuff as it is cos of my work this is out it works out.

    512meg in machine
206meg used by os and all my programs running that i use
    230meg when halflife is running
60meg when playing halflife (for steam)

    206 + 230 + 60 496meg of memory is being used :/

    512 - 496 = 16 meg of memory free :/

so what if i leave msn running thats around 6 meg more

    12 meg <-- ouch

before half-life used to use 180 meg of memory leaving me with well over 100 meg of memory spare.

so take my advise and play halflife via wonid

still works and wont be down till at least 80% of users are using steam with no problem.

all i can say is what is the point of steam worked fine before so what differnce will it make ?

why do you just use steam for downloading the new games ? and creating your steam id.

but as usual valve are only thinking of them selves and how to make more money in the long run.

    so dont help em

Yeah. It's amusing. I have 768mb PC2100 on my server, being the best XP based server in existance, it has roughly 550-600mb free (excluding when HLDS is running, of course).

When I run steam, it jumps down to 212mb, sometimes a little more, others a little less.

It takes up 512mb each bloody time? That's rediculous!
