What the hell?
Okay, My average NS ping is like 500 or 700...I bought a new computer thinking it would fix my lag, but nope! I'm almost 100% positive its my phone lines, cuz they are so damn old.

To the main point, Do you think if I asked the phone company, they would put in new ones? If not, am i **** outta luck?

-Please dont phase to tech, cuz I dont want people to tell me i have to go into properties and blah blah blah. I just wanna know if a phone company would replace my lines-

make sure it isnt your isp first?

also, you could take a laptop and "plug" it into a payphone

    maybe

I'd look into other connection methods. some broadband isn't that expensive. if you pay for a second phone line, you could probably get broadband for less or atleast about the same amount.

if the problem really is phone lines, I doubt they'll rewire your house and possibly some stuff outside, or more.. not for any small amount.

but 500-700ms average on a good server is atrocious -- that's international speed. there's definitely something very wrong.

Make sure you connect to local servers ie in your own country, make sure you are using a 56k modem and not downloading anythign else.

I'm connected to a place 5 miles away from me, and broadband isn't an option. My friend about 5 miles from me gets like 150-200 ping in servers, I know it's my phone line. Now, if I asked my phone company to replace these phone lines (which are like 30 years old) do you think they would?

Probably, but prepare to pay for the whole neighborhood and those 5 miles...

Honestly, there's only one way to find out - find their number and call. I'm sure some telco's would have no problem recabling the line if you explain your internet connection problem, but other companies would probably never do it.

The telco and cable company here is awesome - my cable modem was dropping the connection at least three times a day, so I called the cable tech support. They did some troubleshooting on their side, determined it might be a cabling problem, so they dispatched someone to replace it. Within one hour, there was a tech in my back yard putting up another cable.

I used to be in the same boat, and my only solution was to go get broadband.

Odds are it is your phonelines, especially if the house is say 30 years old or so. All kinds of crap can happen to deteroriate

As far as the phone company is concerned, as long as I could connect at all mine didn't care for quality, and wouldn't re-run lines. At least not for free. I could have paid a few hundred dollars to get the house rewired, but that's not really feasible. Especially if you're younger and living with your parents and you have to explain exactly why you need the entire house re-wired. :P

Well, my friend had the same problem. He had really old phone lines for a while, but they complained to the phone company. It took a really long time (several years), but they eventually got new ones. If you got support from neighbors and even started a petition, you might be able to get them within a year. If that doesn't work, you can get broadband if it's available.

I've worked for Bell and, besides broadband, I'd suggest complaining of noise on your phone line and demand they fix it. Say that the noise comes and goes (just in case they check at your house). Describe humming noise and/or static and that its on all the phones in the house. I believe this kind of thing can get "fixed" for free. Basically, since the noise isn't always there, they'll suspect loose connections and check your line at the local collection box (those green metal boxes you see everywhere but never knew what they're for) and maybe check it at your house. With a possible loose connection like that they might disconnect/reconnect your line, maybe even switch it to a new one if you're lucky.

    Good luck with that.

btw, even if you get DSL if your phone lines are crap, your DSL bandwidth will also be crap.

Yeah back at home the reason our lines were so bad was there was a radio station that overpowered all their towers so we kept hearing their broadcast over the phone, sometimes the tv, even once it was coming out of an appliance (maybe it was the toaster?) which was really freaky.

Spooky, we had to switch companies cause phoneing someone 4 doors down had the quality of phoning someone in Australia (from UK).

    Same for me.
When I got my Cable modem I was getting **** poor connections and I was really mad.
They came, tested everything, added a booster and upgraded my line by adding a new thicker line to the house, all for free in only a few hours.

Phone lines are a pain in the ****, so many things can go wrong.

For all you know there might not be a fiber optic line in your whole neighbourhood! I know I don't have any in mine. But my house was made in the 60's

So should I just called Verizon (my phone company) and tell them how we hear noise and other people talking on our lines, and the internet friggn sucks ****? Do you think they will fix it enough until my internet is non-shite?

Not unless you get more people in the area complaining

And that's the main problem... Mullet, make a rally, gather up at the telecom agency and protest.

I think you should just complain about the line noise. Your phone company probably doesn't care much for your internet connection since you're not directly paying them for it. As I said before, I've worked in this industry (different phone company) and I know that such complaints were addressed. Hopefully whatever fixes they perform for the noise will improve your dial-up speeds (line noise is killer on a dial-up connection).
