<div class="IPBDescription">Detailed instructions</div> Hello,

After reading several good writeups in this forum about how to get steam and NS running I still ran into a few issues with it. Here are details on how I got these errors solved.

1.
Fix max ex_maxerrordistance errors and "reliable channel overflow" client crashes:
-create userconfig.cfg in half-life\ns and add alias "ex_maxerrordistance" ""
<make sure your \ns\config.cfg file contains exec userconfig.cfg>

2.
-Fix cmdr menu font, console message RE missing fonts and make them less fuzzy:
<This improves the marine right click cmd menu some but not all the way,>
-backup and remove all files from half-life\ns\gfx\vgui\fonts
and
-backup and remove all ****_textscheme.txt from half-life\ns
note: there have since been reported several other ways to edit the _textscheme.txt files and change the res on fonts, this seems to work for some, but this method fixed the most for me.

3.
Fix missing sprite errors which cause comm fps lag and console error msgs:
-copy half-life\ns\sprites\blank.spr to half-life\ns\sprites\techtree\tech0s.spr
-copy this same file to each of the following in the half-life\ns\sprites dir:
top_left.spr
top.spr
top_right.spr
left.spr
right.spr
bottom_left.spr
bottom_right.spr
horizontal.spr
vertical.spr
top_left2.spr
top2.spr
top_right2.spr
left2.spr
right2.spr
ch_sniper.spr
bottom.spr
commander.spr

These changes worked for me at 1024res so YMMV. Backup everything you change and see if these changes don't help your console get closer error free and your steam NS game less laggy.

EDIT: Pls read my below post RE: the splash screen. Download the resource.zip to get the NS splash screen in steam

Thanks billcat! Works great for me and cleared up a bunch of error messages in showing up in the console. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    @billcat
ehm ok I didn't realize it at first because I didn't copy/paste it but you have a typo in your text...

"borrom_right.spr" should be of course "bottom_right.spr" and "bottom.spr" is missing in the list.

    Thx,

I edited the above and added another sprite file I found was missing when a cmdr gave you a direct order.

    Another steam issue resolved.

If you're tired of seeing the HL gimp with the glasses as you're trying to load up a NS steam game wait no longer!

It's now possible to have the correct NS splash screen in steam. Kudos to the guys over at the IOS mod forums, using their file as a template I created a zip file that contains the files needed to have the NS splash work once again.

Unzip the resource.zip file in your existing ns directory. This should create a resource directory with the gamemenu.res and a background directory with the rest of the background files.

I'm tested this in GL mode at 1024x768 so YMMV. Please post and let me know if this works for you.

    <a href='http://jobu.vandussen.com/~billcat/resource.zip' target='_blank'>resource.zip file</a>

want to change the 'Half-Life' and 'Steam' buttons/logos create these files

    game_menu.tga
    game_menu_mouseover.tga
    steam_menu.tga
    steam_menu_mouseover.tga

196x32 targa with alpha channel for a mask where to blend and where not... (i'm not sure about the size since ricochet used a smaller size but if you go to large it just cuts it anyway)

I didn't notice much improvement in the popup menus (both teams). If you or anyone could fix that we'd just about have it licked.

Someplace in the middle of the night my DSL took a crap so I'm mirroring the file someplace else.

    <a href='http://jobu.vandussen.com/~billcat/resource.zip' target='_blank'>resource.zip</a>

The font solution isn't perfect yet, I know, I'll keep working on that one.

you know what I was thinking? If they fix Steams issues with fonts and sprites, won't we ("we" being the people using these fixes) be totally screwed?

Is there a server side fix for these problems?
  • Vahn_PaktuVahn_Paktu Join Date: 2002-10-28 Member: 1666Members, Constellation
Only one you can do server side is have them download the missing sprites.
  • DrekDrek Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11165Members
Ya, I sorta realized it was a stupid question after I asked it. I just can't see making my clan jump through all those hoops. I would guess the NS team will release a client side patch to fix the problems...

I get these four errors everytime I join now. I can ignore them and connect ok, but I want to make them go away:<ul>
    <li>File: Src\Fs.cpp Line 505 uMaxSize
    <li>File: Src\Fs.cpp Line 506 uMinSize
    <li>File: SrcCacheOneFileFixedBlock.cpp Line 1801 uCacheFileSize != 0
    <li>File: SrcCacheOneFileFixedBlock.cpp Line 1248 uCacheFileSize</ul>
    What's up with this ?!?!?!?!?!?

I seem to get a missing commander.mdl error, despite being able to see the command chair perfectly fine, and getting into commander mode seems to work fine too... I think it may be happening when I exit the comm chair, or enter.... Not too sure on this one yet...

I'll prolly just copy and paste that blank mdl and rename it as the commander mdl...

If you'll look at Billcat's original post "commander.spr" is on the list.

There's a commpkg.zip available for download which includes all sprites necesssary to eliminate the 18 error messages AND commander building lag at <a href='http://www.ugleague.org/module.php?id=&div=nso' target='_blank'>Ultimate Gamers League's website</a> in the "Downloads" section. This package also reduces normal player lag.

These fixes works fine for me. Most of the text looks normal now as far as I have tested. The Menu-system is still garbled and unreadable, but player names and locations seems to be fixed. It also stops most of the errors I have gotten on Steam.

If someone could figure out how to fix the menues, so that they are readable, it's almost perfect. I really love the new start splash for NS <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

He said .mdl meaning model not .spr, which is a sprite.

I also get that commander.mdl error also.

I made a simple patch a while back that did the same job as the patch kwikloader mentioned but didn't have all those unneeded sprites. My patch just eliminated the call for them simple because, who is going to play NS in any res under 640 x 480?

Anyway here is the patch I did. I would reccomend you backup your ns\sprites\hud.txt before installing.
