Good concept. Works for most people. Not me.
P-Khan: My personal opinion: DigiPen, if you can both get in and afford it.

2. I am still in high school, how can I prepare myself to apply to DigiPen Institute of Technology? If you are interested in the Real-Time Interactive Simulation program, you should focus your studies on mathematics, physics, and computer science. We recommend you take all of the following:
Math up to the level of AP Calculus. Physics up to the grade 12 level. Computer science up to the grade 12 level. If you are interested in applying to the 3D Computer Animation program, you should develop your arts skills as much as possible. Classes that involve art, drawing, photography, sculpture, and story writing, for example, will be very helpful.
More importantly, if you would like to find out whether game programming or 3D computer animation is really what you would like to do as a career, you can attend DigiPen's Summer Workshop. You can find more information at the Summer Workshop page.
...
so...either they all skipped grades or you need to explain further?
Disclaimer : Not American, so if your educational system differs wildly, y'know....
Well, what can YOU do?
Are you a fabulous programmer? Talented artist? Born Animator?
You don't really give much information about what <i>you</i> can do, y'know?
It's easy to be "into computers", hell, it's 2003, most people could be, the question is "Where are your strengths in this particular field?"
Controversial disclaimer: As far as I can tell, the game industry looks like a real beeyatch. I could be totally wrong ( and in many ways I hope I am ), but I think Flayra is out of work at the minute ( sorry if I'm wrong, I only have what I read on the webby to go by.), and it frankly scares me that the guy who knocked out one of my favourite games of all time, probably behind only "Elite", and "Carrier Command", a game that absolutely pisses over so many games I wasted my cash on, is out of a job!!, It's like, if he ain't employed, my chances are between zero and none...why am I even trying to do this?
I suppose the answer is " I enjoy this..."
Probably won't work out, still seems a better alternative than spending the next 15 years in a callcentre job I <i> know</i> I will hate...
/shrugs
Edit: Be nice if a few of the devs could throw opinions in here?
I imagine a lot of the readers would be interested?

Remember, there's a world full of difference between making a fun, innovative game and making a game that you're going to sell. Flayra made NS, and not only did he do the code, but he did the whole CONCEPT. NS isn't just a bunch of lines of code, some models, and some sounds; it's a game, with balancing and everything. That's very nice for a half life mod, but if you want to go into the industry, you'll be making everything you can, from awesome things like Half-Life 3 to Putt Putt and Fatty Bear Go To The Carnival. Remember, bad games and mediocre games are made all the time. SOMEONE has to make them; that's where game programmers/artists come in.
Just a question CrouchingHamster,HiddenElvis, you from Britain or Scotland? Cause if you are, I can give you better information since I did the GCSEs (well, IGCSEs since I'm not in the UK).
Well, I went over the DigiPen FAQ, and the MIT admission page, and I believe I fit into both of them. I really enjoy physics (GPA 4.19 in physics, with a range from 0.0 to 4.3) and maths (GPA 4.0, exactly). I can also do some simple programs with C++ language, such as making a program which can solve linear and quadratic equations. Really simple. I did some maps for Age of Empires II and Warcraft III, which were quite good I think (got this comments from my friends).
I'm no computer, programing God, nor a map making genious. Just do these things as a hobby.

My point is, if you ever change your mind and decide that making games isn't for you, you'll still have a great advantage in getting a job. Dunno about our American cousins, but at least in UK / Europe we've at least <i>heard of </i> MIT, so it probably gains bonus points for that alone, in much the same way a degree from Oxford / Cambridge might carry more weight than an identical degree from an equally proficient / superior local uni in UK....
