Unit & Tactics Guide: Gorge

<div class="IPBDescription">Learn 2 Build & Evolve Effectively</div> I read the other gorge guides out there; I have also used several gorge tactics in practice from gorge rush to combat healer... however there are some basics that you can follow, n00b or "elite" that will help your team win more frequently. Read my guide to be the Uber-gorge!

<!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <b>Know your Strengths:</b>
All alien types have their strengths. For the gorge you can build defenses & upgrades to defeat your opponent. This alien type excels at delaying and blocking off resources and pathways. You receive resources faster than other alien types.

<!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <b>Know your Weaknesses:</b>
You are easily killed by yourself without any defenses around you. You rely heavily on resources... without them you are almost worthless unless you have great skills. For the most part your attacks are too weak to kill marines unless they are n00bs or already hurt.

<!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <b>Abbreviations:</b>
DC's = Defense chambers (they heal you, alien sturctures, and freidly units)
OC's = Offensive chambers (they attack)
SC's = Sensory chambers (they cloak you and alien stuctures)
MC's = Movement chambers (they help aliens move faster)
RC's = Resource chambers (they give you resource points)

<!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <b>The best evolutions for a gorge:</b>
Regeneration - You heal so you are not reliant on other gorges.. 1 DC and regeneration are equivalnt to 2 gorges healing you.
Adrenaline - Makes your yellow stamina bar recover quickly.. allows for fast healing of comrads and OC's
Cloaking - You can hide in corners in case things get to hot in a hot zone.

<!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <b>Tactics:</b>
Early in the game it is extreemly important you build 2 RC's asap. They should both be ideally close to your hive. Don't worry about putting up defenses yet, since your fellow team mates should provide the defensive structures and the physical protection for you.

Now study the map carefully. Usually you can get 2 team mates to cover you as you build a RC close to the marines base. It is very important that you choose the one that is close, but that is not frequented. This will allow you to block off the passage with 2 to 3 OC's early in the game. Until they get some upgrades, this will be sufficent to deter them from advancing through that passage way. Just remeber that against a competent marine, 1 OC is easy to take out... even with a gorge defending it.

Build a defense chamber behind your first line of OC's. Then place an OC on top of it. It is ver important that you do not stack your OC's on top of eachother since in many instances because of the angle of fire, only the ones on top will shoot.

Now that you have blocked off a minor artery of marine movement, and captured a third RC (an RC is frequently located near a minor artery) You can save up until you get about 20 res. In the mean time develop your traits to make yourself more powerfull. Keep healing those OC's until marines give up and move on. If they don't stop harrasing you.. build a couple more OC's and DC's to foul up their commanders strategy.

Unless they have heavys and hmg's or greanade launchers it will be difficult for them to get past that point... however it is rare that they will have a com that will spend the res to do that early in the game.

Now you want to advance up to their major artery and quickly drop 3 oc's. Build them fast and you will have enough for a forth OC. after 4 OC's build 2 DC's. You want to be as far awy from their base as possible when you block off the artery passage way so you are out of seige cannon range, and far enough that skilled marines will have to walk at least 12 to 18 seconds to get back to their base to get more ammo. Ideally you want to hold this position and build Movement chambers ASAP.

Hopefully you have web by now...

Ideally you want to shoot web right in front of your OC's as much as you can. If you have 15 yards of webbed area with OC's at the end... no smart marine is going to bother trying to get through.

Now back off and get some more RC's without fear of marines stomping you easily. Almost no defenses will be neccesarry since it will be difficult for them to skirt around the other way to get to your side of the map... and if they do you can dispatch them with your uber-gorge spit attack in their weakend state.

Now work your way to the other passage artry that is still in use by marines. You can Start by dropping a bunc of OC's just like at the other location. Since there are usally only 2 major passage arteries to a marine HQ you can block them off effectively. Even if you only delay them with a bunch of OC's.. or even if they run past your OC's they will be weakened by them and will either med-spam (wasting resources) or be easy kills (giving you resources). At the very least the delay of not getting resources will make it difficult for them to upgrade enough to bypass your other team members.

As a general rule for the first 5 to 10 minutes of the game it takes 1 Marine Per 1 OC. Even later in the game you have DC's nearby to counterbalance the weapon upgrades.

<!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo-->

Now I know many people say: <i>"forget OC's, just build as many RC's as possible!"</i> ...

... and to that I say: It takes 10 res to evolve into a gorge + 6 res for upgrades... and the time to walk back here. I have died maybe 2 to 3 times as a cautious gorge, and built 10 OC's and 6 DC's blocking off this half of the map from our opponents. In addition I have not lost an RC yet (15 res, plus the lost res while it was down) because they cant get their marines through this side of the map. so lets do the addition, and compare the diffrence.

<u>Lot's of OC's and DC's Method:</u>
OC's 10 x 10 = 100
DC's 5 x 10 = 50
Going gorge 2 times: 10 x 2 = 20
<u>Total:</u> <b>170</b> res plus you know where they are attacking next

<u>Minimal Defenses Method: </u>
2 x 15 (RC's) + 2 x 15 lost potential res each time = 60
Going gorge 7 times: 10 x 7 = 70
Evolve upgrades 7 times: 7 x 6 = 42
DC's (you need some anyways) 2 x 10 = 20
OC's (you need some anyways) 2 x 10 = 20
<u>Total:</u> <b>212</b> res and you don't know where they are attacking next

There you have it... although you could argue you may save not getting as many upgrades... you will probly die a few more times... and/or build 1 or 2 more OC's or upgrade chambers. Now don't all of you go gorge now... lol <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Don't forget that Movement Chambers near your Offense Chambers will allow them to shoot spikes more frequently (unless they took that out while I wasn't looking.)

    Just to clarify and sum all of this stuff in one post, gorges get res at the same rate as everyone else, and mc's have no effect on oc's.

    just to also add there's next to no point in building ocs in your hive because they'll be taken out by siege; put ocs to block the routes into sieging range of the hive <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    OC's in the hive are plenty useful. First of all, if they do siege, it can target the oc's first and give you more time to respond and save the hive. That is more time that the commander must use to scan the hive room and be distracted from other things. If they don't siege, and instead march in to kill the hive, the oc's will be just as good there to defend as they are at defending any other place.

    You say adrenaline for gorges...yeh thats good, and its what I used to choose all the time. Then I tried out Silence. I love it! Its much better than Adrenaline for a stealthy attack gorge...ie creeping up to the marine base and building right next to them...they cant hear a thing until its too late <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Just my opinion anyways - Adrenaline is probably more useful for a standard gorge. <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo-->

    let's put it this way... the time you spent putting those ocs in the hive is time you could've spent building ocs to stop them even getting near the silly thing in the first place <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Movements dont speed up oc attack rate. Was too powerful.

    Gorges get res at the same rate, except for the fact that u dont get as much res for kills as the other aliens. Even though gorges do spend less time dead.

    As for best evolutions, SoF is extremely useful, u know when to call for backup, u know when to drop an oc to protect u, u know when to run from a rine and u know exact numbers of ppl when they are doin an attack.

    Cloaking yeh u hide but u dont know much else.

    Silence is awesome for the building gorge noone can hear him building and if u build a MC next to u, u get adren anyway.

    Celerity is awesome for the big bolt up to drop some OCs, is good for a fast getaway and is good for dodging and landing spit kills. As above if u build an mc next to u u dont have to worry about adren also if u get in trouble u can teleport out.

    And finally redeem is also quite nice to pull u out of trouble, bit less useful when upgrades come into play. Carapace is only really useful for multiple gorge strats.

    Also ur effectiveness is doubled if u get a buddy gorge, u build twice as fast, heal things faster, double the res for building, u can take on rines easier.

    One wish i have for gorges though is Celerity should speed up building, silence makes u quiet when building, u can cloak while building but celerity should speed up build time IMO.

    However, there are also usually two entrances to a hive. If you are limited on res, then it is better to defend the hive area itself than one of the entrances, or splitting the defense over the two entrances. If you have lots of res, spam everywhere with 8 oc's and 8 dc's. That ignores that there is often a vent into the hive that a JP'er could use (if the comm gives out jp's), bypassing all of those external defenses.

    Additionally, if an oc is sieged in your hive and a small amount of splash damage hits the hive, there is a high chance that aliens will respond to protect it/kill the siege, but if the oc's are outside the hive and are attacked, more people will ignore them. This is talking about pubs, of course.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
    s'pose... being a pub player I never worry about vents; jps are almost a foreign concept to me. All I ever see from the marines are different weapons, welders and HA gangs lol.

    fair enough <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Nice guide--except that the whole thing was written for v1.4. Since we are now all playing v2.01, it's not very accurate at all any more.

    Not too bad for a relatively new poster, this would be good if also posted in the new player forums.
